“Very close, buddy, I’ll give you that. My parents are weirder than me, and that’s all you’re getting tonight. I’m not that drunk yet,” she told him, and then as if on cue, she hiccuped.

“Ah, the key word – 'yet’; we can work on that,” he pointed out, reaching for another shot. Paige shook her hand.

“No more, I’ll puke. Are you trying to get me drunk? Take advantage of me?” she joked, pressing a hand to her chest as she swayed on her bar stool.

Whoa. Maybe she wasthatdrunk.

“I don’t do things like that. I would never do that,” he told her with a frown, putting the shot back. Paige hiccuped again.

“Whoa, dude, I wasn’t accusing you of anything. Just, you know how guys are,”hiccup,“they do stuff like that. You’re a guy. You do stuff, I’m sure,”hiccup.“Goddamn it! Make them stop!”Hiccup, hiccup.

Parker chuckled and pulled out his wallet.

“Cute. Well, I am a guy and I know how guys are, and I know I’m not one of those kind of guys, and I don’t do that kind of ‘stuff’, so thank you for that,” he said, throwing a couple big bills on the bar before standing up and walking towards the door. She chased after him, throwing her purse strap over her head and across her body.

“Okay, c’mon, hold up, you can’t get angry – you’re a guy and I’m a girl and we just met and we’re throwing back shots and drinks. I’m not a weirdo for making some assumptions. Besides, it was ajoke,” she called after him as they made their way outside. Parker turned around.

“I know, I know, it just weirds me out. We’re friends. I haven’t hit on you once, have I? Just forget it, let’s get out of here,” he said, fumbling with his keys. Paige realized her hand was still tangled in her purse strap and she struggled with it.

“Uh, maybe driving isn’t such a good idea,” she suggested, staggering towards him just as he dropped his keys on the ground. They both bent to grab them and bonked heads. With only one hand free, Paige lost her balance and fell on her butt. Parker watched her for a second before they both burst out laughing.

“Okay, okay, my graceful gazelle, good point. Let’s go find some shady motel so I can take dirty drunken advantage of you,” he joked, winking at her before walking off down the street.

“Hey!I’m still sitting here!” she shrieked after him.

“... the kind of kid who wasn’t really bad, but was determined to try to be ...”

“Oh my god,” Paige croaked. She brought a hand to her head, not opening her eyes.

She was in a big bed, though she didn’t have a clear memory of getting there. She rolled her head to the side and peaked an eye open. She was laying almost sideways in a queen size bed, her head pointing towards one corner and her feet pointing towards the opposite corner, her legs spread eagle with the blankets pulled up and bunched around her knees. She slowly sat up, keeping her hand on her head. The comforter pooled around her waist.

She was in a motel room. She began to remember stumbling in with Parker. She looked across the room. Next to her bed was a tiny twin bed, and on top of it lay Parker, still fully clothed, even wearing his shoes and jacket. He was curled on his side, his back towards her. She laughed, which quickly turned into a moan and she brought her other hand to her head, trying to stop the pounding that was going on inside her skull.

“Ma!Not now!” Parker groaned, and Paige laughed again in spite of the pain.
