“You better not!” Paige shouted as the guy ran off into the crowd.

“You okay?” Parker asked with a small laugh. She nodded.

“Yeah, he just surprised me. But not as much as you grabbing him like that. Wow, Parker,” she said as the music around them died down. He ducked his head, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Yeah, when he smacked your ass, I saw red for a little bit. But who does that!? If a woman ever told me not to touch her, I certainly wouldn’t go ahead and smack her ass.”

Paige smiled. He sounded nervous right then, but he'd almost sounded jealous when he'd been yelling at the guy. It was stupid, but it made her happy.

“He deserved a little scare. I was just surprised. And hey, who ever said you were my boyfriend, huh?” she teased, walking up next to him and nudging his shoulder with hers.

“I didn’t think it was the time to break down an explanation of our relationship to the kid. Besides, I figured he’d be more likely to piss his pants if he thought he'd touched a girl who was here with a guy like me,” he explained. Paige snorted.

“A guy like you? What are you? God’s gift to women?”

“Obviously. Let’s get out of here.”

He lead the way out of the bar. The cool night air felt good to Paige after the stifling heat of the show. She took a deep breath, pulling the strap of her purse over her head and rolling it up around the bag itself.

“Did you get into a lot of scrapes in Connecticut?” Paige asked as he unlocked her car door for her. He glanced at her before heading around to his side and climbing in next to her.

“Why do you ask?” was his response before starting up the engine.

“I don’t know, seems like you know what you’re doing. Kid in there freaked out at the idea of being in a fight – you looked ready to do whatever you said you were gonna do. Seems like someone who's been in a fight or two,” she pointed out. He gripped the steering wheel, navigating through the full parking lot.

“I’ve been in a couple fights, but what about you? You always look ready for a fight – got anything to back that up with?” he countered. She laughed, rolling down her window.

“Oh yeah, I’ve been in lots of fights. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but sometimes my mouth can kind of fly off at the handle,” she replied. He laughed as well.

“Really? I hadn’t noticed at all. So you smack bitches around?”

“I don’t know about smack around, but I’ve gotten into a few scrapes, thrown some punches. Almost got arrested once, but managed to sneak away. Girls are just asking for it half the time, you know? My temper is already like at an eight even when I’m sleeping, so it doesn’t help when you say one wrong thing, and some crazy girl gets in your face trying to prove she’s a bad bitch. And once I point that out to them, the claws come out –literally. What is it with girls and scratching? And hair pulling! I hate having my hair pulled! I would rather just lay some bitch out with a haymaker and be done with the whole thing,” she said in an exasperated tone.

Parker didn’t stop laughing till they were back on the highway.

“So you wanna go back to the motel or ...” he let his voice trail off.

“Or ... what? This place isn’t exactly known for its entertainment,” she pointed out.

“We could get a drink somewhere,” he suggested. Paige smiled at him.

“Why, Parker, are you asking me on a date?” she laughed, and he laughed as well.

“Paige, we’ve been sharing hotel rooms for the better part of a month – we’re practically married. Andno. Just didn’t want you to waste your ‘fancy’ outfit on one outing,” he explained.

“If this is marriage, then I definitely need another drink,” she said, punctuating it with a fake shudder.

“What are you talking about? I treat you good!”

“You snore. Shut up and drive.”

The bar they pulled into was near enough to their motel they could walk if they had to, at the end of the night. Paige was surprised the bar was totally packed – but then she realized it was a Saturday night in a town less than thirty minutes from a college. Young people filled the bar from wall to wall and crusty locals guarded the bar stools.

“Wow, I guess I thought it would be a calmer atmosphere in here. Drink?” Parker asked, shrugging his jacket off as they sat at a small, high-top table.

“Yeah, just get me anything, and a shot of ... Crown, I guess. Thanks,” Paige ordered.

He lifted a hand in a wave as he headed off towards the bar. He was back surprisingly soon, and was holding a tray. He carefully slid it onto the table top, revealing six shots and four Coronas.
