“I didn’t start this, she did! I’m just finishing it!”

Blondie was pushing herself into an upright position. Her hair was a mess and she had scratch marks down one side of her face, her eye makeup smeared across her cheek. She glared at Paige and was clearly trying to decide whether a second attack was a good idea.

“You stupid bitch! I should have your ass thrown in jail!” she yelled at Paige.

“Get fucked! I’ll bounce your ass around this bar like a basketball before making you chew on your own weave!” Paige shouted back.

Parker burst out laughing behind her, and surprisingly, it calmed her down. Hearing him laugh made her fully realize how ridiculous she must look. Hell, if she'd been witnessing someone act like her, she'd be laughing at them, too. She stopped struggling against his hold and realized he'd been backing up the whole time.

“Are you calm?” he asked. She nodded.

“As I’m gonna get. Put me down,” she ordered through clenched teeth. He slowly sat her on her feet and she stepped away, straightening out her skirt.

“Yeah, y’all better leave!” Blondie decided to bravely yell as she climbed to her feet. Paige cocked up an eyebrow.

“We’re done, just shut the hell up and go back to wherever you came from,” she suggested, reaching up to feel her own hair. It didn’t feel as bad as Blondie’s looked, but it didn’t feel pretty, either. She pulled it out of its messy ponytail and smoothed it out, re-gathering it at the back of her head.

“Oh, you may be done,” Blondie started, charging across the room, “but I’m not!”

Paige had barely gotten her hair back up when Blondie reached them, her arms swinging. Paige lifted a hand to defend herself, but Parker got in between, placing his hand against Blondie’s shoulder to keep her away and putting his other hand against Paige’s stomach, though she made no move towards the other girl.

“Calm down! She said it’s done, so it’s done! Get outta here!” he snapped.

“Youget outta here! You don’t get to eye-fuck me from across the bar and then pretend you’re innocent in front of your girlfriend!” Blondie shrieked.

It was one thing to insult Paige – it was quite another to insult Parker. Paige was onethosegirls, she took great offense at her friends being insulted. And Parker was the nicest friend she'd ever had, and he'd certainly not been “eye-fucking” anyone. At least not that night, and definitely not in that bar.

So to insult him and lie about him, that sent Paige back over the deep end. She knew she looked ridiculous and she didn’t care – she was gonna teach this tramp a lesson. She jumped forward and suddenly Parker was sandwiched between the two girls; a reverse of their situation at the concert, just hours before.

Life is funny.

“Just because you fantasize about something doesn’t make it a reality!” Paige yelled, clawing at the girl’s shirt. Parker was struggling to keep space between the girls and neither could quite reach the other.

“Just cause you can't see your boyfriend doesn’t give a shit about you doesn’t mean it ain’t true!” Blondie yelled back.

“ENOUGH!” Parker roared and pushed against both of them.

Paige stumbled backwards and Parker followed, bending over in front of her. Before she could blink, he'd grabbed her by the legs and hoisted her over his shoulder. She flopped over his back and as he shoved through the crowd, she managed to grab onto his belt and push herself almost upright.

“You got lucky!” Blondie shouted.

“You’relucky, you stupid backwoods country bitch!” Paige shouted. Blondie opened her mouth to respond, but then Paige and Parker passed through the exit and the door slammed shut.

Paige expected Parker to put her down immediately, but he continued marching in silence across the parking lot. Paige thought he might be angry and decided to keep her mouth shut. She had kinda ruined their night a little, she supposed. But she was definitely a little drunk. Her fly through the air over his shoulder had confirmed it – the parking lot was spinning a little in front of her eyes – andthatshe could blame on Parker.

So really, it was all his fault.

She hiccuped and he stopped and abruptly sat her down.

“What was that, Paige?” he asked. She struggled to catch her footing and he offered a hand. She took it and steadied herself.

“Hey, she was asking for it. I told her to go away,” Paige pointed out, hiccuping again and swaying slightly.

“You were being ridiculous. You were also two seconds from getting arrested, you know that? There were bouncers in there,” he pointed out. She waved her hand.

“Pfffft. A warning at most. She started it,” she explained.

She was surprised when he threw his head back and laughed. She realized he wasn’t mad at all. If anything, he looked almost as excited as she still felt. While he looked at the sky and chuckled, Paige looked down at their hands. She was still clasping his and Paige realized that in the past five minutes, Parker had touched her more than he previously had on their entire trip. The same warmth from earlier spread throughout her whole body and she glanced up at him.
