“Good. Even better once you sit here.” He indicated his groin, where he showed a bulge that bothered.

“I think I’ll remain standing, and you’ll stay sitting.

“Yes.” His glazed eyes unfocussed. “You’re pretty. I’ll bet you have a nice scream.”

The man was foul, but I was here for a job. Sounded like he was ready to wag his tongue.

“Why are you here?” I asked.

“For the King’s aid.”

“Why do you need his help?”

A tremble took him as he whispered, “Because I don’t know how to stop it.”

“Stop what?”

“The deaths.”

He didn’t elaborate so I had to tease it out. “Who died?”

“All those who answer the call.”

“I hear you found some ruins.”

“We should have never opened the blocked shaft.”

“Why was it blocked?”

“Because it’s a bad place.” He shifted in agitation. “I need to leave.” He stood, and I used a hand to gently push him back down.

“Shhh.” I soothed him. “How bad can it be for a brave man like you?”

He didn’t soften much at my praise. “There’s something down there. And it’s hungry.”

“Sounds like a monster.”

“It’s her ghost!”

“Whose ghost?”

“I can’t say her name. She might find me.” The Duke became agitated again, and I quickly poured some cooling coffee and handed it to him.

“Have a drink.”

“Yes. You’re so nice. I’m going to like hurting you.” His vapid smile chilled me. He couldn’t help but speak the truth, as disgusting as I found it.

“Did you ask the King for soldiers?”

“What for?”

“To kill what’s in the mine.”

“You can’t kill a ghost.” His smirk mocked.

“Then why did you come here?”

“For refuge.”
