First, I had to know. “What gave me away?”

“Everything. The way you spoke. How you ate. Moved.”

“Ouch. Well, good thing I won’t have to pretend anymore. Meaning, let’s get down to business. Let’s start with monsters. How long have you been dealing with them?”

“Coming up on three decades.”

Longer even than the first attack on my family. “Where do they come from?”

“The First.”

“First what?”

“The First Jewel, of course.”

That slight hint of sarcasm surprised. I stared into his eyes, glazed and looking ahead. Definitely drugged.

“It exists?”

“It does.”

“Where?”

“In the desert.”

At this rate, it would take me forever to extract information. I’d circle back. “Why are you recalling all your soldiers?”

“Because they’re needed.”

“Needed for what?”

I’d have sworn he paused before replying, “To hold back the monsters.”

I ran my hand over his jaw, rubbing the last of the potion in my ring into his skin. “Are they in the city?”

“Not yet but soon.”

I froze before asking stiffly, “What’s your plan?”

“To fight them as long as we can.” A chilling reply.

“Is that where all your recruits went? Are they all dead from fighting monsters?”

“They’re dead protecting the kingdom and the people in it. They’re dead because someone is bringing monsters into our world.”

“Who?”

“You tell me, spy.” His gaze focused as he grabbed me.

It should have been impossible.

“Calm down.”

“I will not—” He stopped midsentence, his head swiveling to look behind.

He grabbed me around the waist and jumped into the basin where the waterfall plunged. I opened my mouth and panicked, water rushing in.

I’m drowning.
