“Have you noticed how hairy they are?” I exclaimed in reply.

“You’ll have to forgive Ash, my dear Palla. Her attraction runs to men more like the King,” Qynn remarked casually.

“He’s okay looking,” I lied and blushed, ruining the statement.

A sly look entered Qynn’s gaze. “There was much buzz about the fact you and the King kept spending time together.”

“Doing my job,” I huffed.

“And enjoying it by what I heard. He is supposedly very charismatic.”

“If that’s what you call arrogant and stern.”

“Most would call it powerful. And power is attractive.”

“Fine, would you like me to say he’s handsome? Then he is, very much so. And we did flirt so I could get close to him. Which turned out to be a failure since he’s immune to the calm and obedience recipe.”

“Are you sure you didn’t have a dud?”

“The gas launched. I saw it. He only pretended to succumb to fool me.”

“How strange. He must have some kind of protection against it.” Qynn tapped her lower lip

“Conditioning like I went through?”

“It would make sense. You wouldn’t want a king susceptible to outside influence,” Qynn mused.

“And you didn’t think of this before sending me in?” I grumbled.

Qynn shrugged. “Never had the opportunity to find out before.”

“So, what happens now? What will Jrijori do? We still don’t know the cause of the monsters.”

“But the King’s hints indicate he does. We’ll have to find another way to access him.”

“You want me to go back?” I offered.

“Don’t be foolish.” Qynn waved a hand. “Your cover was spoiled. I’ll have to find someone else to get close to him.”

For some reason that bothered me. “What’s the point if the drugs don’t work?”

“I’ll figure something out. You did good. Get some rest and let me know when you’re ready to announce your return to the stage.”

“That’s it?” I frowned. “I just go back to my life and forget everything I’ve learned?”

“Didn’t you just say monsters and wars and fighting are the problems of kings and soldiers?” Qynn trapped me with my own words.

“But you’re still looking into the cause.”

“As a favor to Jrijori. The more information he’s armed with, the better equipped he’ll be to fight it.”

“Do you need help?”

“Start asking your clients what they know about monsters and old ruins. Oh, and if they’ve heard of problems under the city.”

“You believe there’s monsters?”

“I’d be foolish to not look into it.”
