“So why not confront me then? Why let me into your castle and pretend?”

“Because I wanted to know why the subterfuge.”

“I could have been a killer,” I stated, not too brightly.

“If that were the case, you’d be dead.”

“If you knew all along, I guess that means everything you told me was false.”

“Actually, I only spoke the truth. Although I did keep some parts to myself.”

“What parts?”

“You don’t get to ask the questions.”

I pursed my lips and remained argumentative. “Why are you here?”

“You left without saying goodbye.”

“Can you blame me? You locked me in a room. I wasn’t waiting to be executed.”

“Is that what you thought I’d do?”

“Isn’t that what you do to traitors?” I retorted.

“Yes, but you’re hardly a traitor.”

I was confused. “I went to the castle to spy on you and convince you to do more to fight monsters.”

“Your methods might have been questionable, but your intent wasn’t evil.”

“I was hired by Jrijori.” It was as if I wanted to be punished.

“Who honestly wants to prevent the monsters from multiplying any further. We had a chat after your departure, a frank one, which is what he should have tried in the first place. It was informative and meshed with some rumors I’d heard.”

“Well, isn’t that just lovely for you both.” Sarcasm hued my tone.

“It was actually.”

“And you still haven’t told me why you’re really here. I don’t know anything of interest.”

“I told you. You left without saying goodbye.”

I blinked. “I’m sorry. Were the King’s feelings hurt?” Then, because I felt light and strange all at once, I grabbed his hand and put it to my chest over my heart, which beat behind the swell of my breast. “I’m so sorry I left without saying my farewells. You were such a sweet host, what with almost getting me killed because people don’t like you, trying to drown me, and then locking me away.”

“I was trying to make sure you didn’t leave before I was ready.”

“Ready for what?” I huffed.

He dragged me close and kissed me.

I’ll admit I didn’t expect it. I ignited the moment our mouths touched. We embraced quite passionately for a moment before a low coughing broke us apart.

I stared at Palla, poor Palla, stuck watching us.

I poked the King’s chest. “Fix my friend right now.”

“You’re not supposed to boss around kings,” he grumbled.
