“Not keep the monsters a secret for one.”

“It would cause panic.”

“Yes. It would. But once people got over their initial shock, they could prepare. Arm themselves. Erect defenses.”

“Temporary measures.”

“Better than none.”

“I’m handling it.”

“Yes, I can see that.” I eyed him and arched a brow. “Lots of monsters in the local gradeenas.”

“Can’t a king pay a visit?”

“Not when said king is supposed to be entertaining potential wives.”

He grimaced. “I sent them away.”

“Making way for a new batch?” I quipped.

“I see you still have an obsession with my marital status.”

“You would know all about desire.” His lips flattened, and his eyes sparked as if angry.

I lifted my chin. I wouldn’t show shame. “What if I do?”

“You should find another occupation.”

“Doing what? Cooking? It would be a waste of burned food. I also have limited skills when it comes to sewing. I am terrible at singing.”

“You could have married.”

“Ah yes, I should have let a man save me instead of saving myself.”

He suddenly crossed the space between us and glowered at me. “How can you think being the tizana of many is better than the wife of one man?”

“What does it matter the number? Or are you going to tell me you don’t have sex? Are you pure, my king? Have you been saving yourself for your wife?”

“Of course not,” he replied harshly. “But it’s—”
