“Fine, then I’ll walk. Goodbye, Your Majesty.”

“My name is Daksh.”

He could have said so many things and I would have kept walking. But his name, something he kept private from everyone…

I whirled. “What did you say?”

“My name is Daksh.”

“And? Why tell me that? It’s not as if I can use it.”

“You can if I tell you to.”

I marched to him and poked him in the chest. “What are you doing?”

“Introducing myself belatedly.”

“Is this because we had sex? Do all your lovers get to call you Daksh?”

“No. Just you.”

I recoiled. “I don’t understand.”

“Have I finally foiled the clever Asharee?”

He definitely had me off balance. I stepped out of his magnetic zone, not that it calmed my racing heart as I prowled his room.

“Aren’t you going to ask me?” he said in the silence.

“Ask you what?” Why he wanted me off balance?

“Why those dragons went after you.”

Not the question I expected. “Because I’m meat.”

“Then why didn’t they go after the easy prey? Nine dragons in all. Their attacks random seeming until I found out who they killed.”

“Killed?” I swallowed hard.

“You’re the only one who survived, and it was only pure luck that I was close enough.”

“Why would they come after me? I’m a nobody.”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

“Let me guess,” I drawled. “They could sniff out the fact I slept with a king.”

His lips quirked. “If that were true, then I can think of a few more who should have been attacked.”

I glared at his reply, suddenly jealous when I had no right to be. “So why do you think the dragons came after me?”

“Because of your magic.”

“Magic?” I snorted.

“They are drawn to it like living creatures to water.”

“They’re beasts with only one thought in mind. Eating. In this case, a dragon saw me hanging out my window for some air and decided I’d be an easy snack.”
