“I haven’t worn a crown in a long time. They give me a headache.”

“Poor King.” I turned from him. “By your logic, if the monsters came after me because I supposedly have magic, isn’t it dangerous to have me in your room? Won’t they try again?”

“Yes, but we won’t be there when they arrive.”

“Oh, and why is that?” I asked.

“Because we’ll be gone by then.”

“Gone where?”

“To find the source of the trouble.”

I stared at him. “By source, you mean the where and why monsters are being made?”

He nodded.

I laughed a little too hard and hysterically.

“I wouldn’t have thought that amusing.”

“Oh, it is because you mistake me for an adventurer.”

“No. I take you for a clever woman who can help me to settle the strife erupting in the desert.”

“Me, help you? How? I can throw a dagger. That’s it. Pretty sure my veil-dancing skills won’t be useful on a trip.”

“Don’t be so sure. Many a beast has been tamed by song and dance.”

“You don’t want me to sing.” While I could be graceful on my feet, my voice on the other hand...

“I’m not leaving you here without protection.”

“I have Palla.”

“Palla isn’t me.”

I blinked. “A king can’t be a tizana’s personal guard.”

“Says who?”

“Everyone.”

“Fairly certain I’m the one who makes the rules in this country.”

A valid point. “I am not going with you to hunt monsters.”

“The source of the monsters,” he corrected.

“Doesn’t matter. I’m not going.”

“Are you sure? Because Palla has already volunteered.”

“What?”

“Qynn, Kya, and Jrijori too.”

I put a hand to my forehead. “Are you telling me all my friends have agreed to join you on this foolhardy expedition?”
