“It’s a commitment for life. It shouldn’t be entered too quickly.”

“And yet suddenly you decided to shop for a wife.”

“I told you before, my councilors felt it was time.”

“So you don’t want to get married?”

“I want it to be right.” He stared at me as he said it.

I shifted my glance away. While a part of me wanted to believe he directed the statement at me, realistically, a marriage between us was impossible. “You said the maps showed a network of tunnels. How do we access them? You said the map you had showing the path was stolen.”

“I don’t need it to find our way. Once we get underground, our path will be obvious.”

“You better not be expecting me to dig. I’m not big on blisters.” I held out my hands.

He grabbed one and held it, growling, “You talk a lot.”

“It’s called being inquisitive. And I wouldn’t have to ask so many questions if you answered with more than a few syllables at a time.”

“You’ll have answers soon enough. Supper is being served. We’ll be leaving shortly after.”

“So soon?” I’d only managed to mix a handful of potions.

“No point in delaying.”

“Won’t people notice you leaving?”

“Not if I can help it. I wouldn’t want the wrong sort to try and stop us.”

“Why would anyone want to prevent you from dealing with the monsters?”

“Someone who wants them to succeed.”

“You think you have a traitor in the castle?”

“I know I do. And they’re helping the monsters.”

He turned away as if it were nothing. I whipped in front and shook my head. “Who would do such a thing?”

“I don’t know. All I do know is they have to be stopped.”

“Since when are kings allowed to be heroes?” My understanding was they had others fighting their battles.

His rueful grin hit me as he replied, “I don’t want to be a hero. They usually have to give up everything to succeed. And I’ve discovered something I will do anything to keep.” The last was whispered as he grabbed me close and kissed me.

It was unexpected and anticipated all at once. From the moment I’d woken, my awareness of him had me waiting for him to act. To prove that what happened before wasn’t a fluke.

He kissed me, and time stopped. Pleasure began. I threaded my fingers in his hair, pressed myself to him, and he groaned.

“We don’t have time.”

“Oh.”

Just a small sound from me and he changed his mind. “I’ll make the time.”

He grabbed me around the waist and carried me to bed, his lips locked to mine. We hit the mattress together, impatient and hungry.

I might still be new to this aspect of life, but I wanted. I wiggled and tugged my robe to raise it, his hands quickly helping me to expose myself. He stroked me, finding me wet and willing between the legs. Putting pressure on that most sensitive part of me.
