He nodded. “I saw someone before I fell into our passageway. By the time I realized we were on the opposite side, it was too late.”

“But they’re alive?”

“I hope.” He didn’t lie.

“How do we get to them?”

“We can’t.”

“What are we going to do?” I wailed as the realization hit me. We were trapped underground.

CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE

My breathing quickened as panic set in.

“Don’t you dare give in to hysterics,” Daksh admonished.

“When should I? I mean it’s not as if we haven’t lost everyone and are trapped by a cave-in.”

“Hardly trapped. We’ll just follow our side of the tunnel to the next junction.”

“If we can reach a junction,” I couldn’t help but add. After all, there might be other sections collapsed.

“If needed, I can brute-force a way out.”

“You mean using magic. Because that worked so well.”

“Would you have preferred to get eaten by bugs?”

I pursed my lips. “What I’d like is to not be stuck underground.”

“It won’t be forever.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“I’m king. My word is law.” He added a wink before striding away from the wall of dirt.

Away from me, assuming I’d just follow.

He was right. Dammit.

“Where are you going?” I quickly caught up.

“Same place I was going before.”

“How? The tunnel we were using has collapsed. What makes you think this one will lead us to the First Jewel?”

“The map showed them interconnecting. The tunnels loop in a spiral, connecting the cities, and from each city, a straight line right to the First.”

I kept stride with him as I worked through something that bothered me. “If you had a map showing where it was, why not go there directly above ground?”

“Because the city is hidden.”

“Or gone.”

“I hope not because my whole plan hinges on finding it.”

“And once you do, then what?”
