Inside a massive cavern, we found the ruins of a tumbled city, oddly illuminated, the glow unearthly.

“What is this place?” Yaanik whispered by my side, which for a giant proved to be loud enough for everyone.

“One of the missing Jewel cities,” Qynn pronounced.

“Another underground one?” How many were there? Too many by my estimation. I missed seeing the sky.

Kya was the one to ask, “What’s causing the glow?”

No one knew. Although Jord had a theory. “Moss.”

I would have scoffed at the claim. We didn’t have moss in the desert.

Until now.

As we entered the ruins, the long dry channel we followed was filled with debris. We chose to walk near to its edge instead.

The eerie light had me nervous. No one asked, but I knew at least Kya wondered if it was safe. Not all poisons could be smelled or seen.

The spooky nature of the moss competed with the daunting realization all the buildings had toppled, stacked in a precarious tableau that literally might take only one stone block falling to trigger the rest.

I had to wonder what held the sand back. I could see gaps, and while there was some sand, the perilous road through the city appeared safe enough. But that could change at any second. I tried not to think of what would happen if the sand found a way through and filled this space.

I noticed the glowing appeared most intense around the gaping windows and doorways. There was also a bright line zigzagging across the ground.

It was Yaanik who observed, “Weird how I can’t smell anything.”

“No poop either,” Daisy pointed out.

Indicating nothing living, yet each one of us kept a wary eye on the buildings. Some, despite their leaning trajectory, reached high overhead.

I had my weapon in hand and didn’t think anything of it until Yaanik pointed it out. “Smart to expect trouble.”

“Always expect trouble. Always be ready,” I repeated.

Which led to chuckling. “I’d swear you were part giant.”

I offered him a startled glance. “Are you calling me big?”

“More like you’re courageous like one.”

A compliment. “Thank you,” I stammered.

His wink just about soaked my knickers. The giant was damned cute, and he kept flirting with me. I didn’t know what to think of it. We’d already slept together twice. He’d been sober both times. Usually, guys only tried to bed me once they’d had a few cups. Only one man had ever drooled at the sight of me. Terryl, who kept offering me money, so I’d stepped on him. Literally. He wanted me to trample him. I’d done it once to afford a really nice dagger, and he’d been in love with me since.

Yaanik, though, didn’t seem like he wanted my oversized feet crunching his bones. In bed, he took care of me first and then made me orgasm a second time with him. Pretty incredible.

I ducked my head lest anyone wonder at my sudden flushed features.

“What is this place?” Kya murmured aloud.

“If we read the signs right, then we’re in the Fourth Jewel,” Jrijori claimed.

“What happened to it?” I asked.

“Sink hole.” This came from Abel.

“Doesn’t sound right because the canal remained intact,” Jord argued. “I think the city was built inside a huge cavern.”
