“There was a spell. If I severed their bond, he wouldn’t die,” Marcus explained.

“Die? When my husband died, I’d have rather been dead than suffer as I have.” She swiped at her tears. “I’m not talking about his body. I’m talking about his heart.”

“I have to think about all of my subjects and Chester—”

“Coward.” Allie crossed her arms. “Do you know what I did when someone wanted to kill my husband? My stepson?” She glared at him. “I tried tosavethem.”

“You have to understand—”

“I do not. I don’t like you, Marcus. I will not be returning here visiting you or . . .anything.” She turned to leave. “Anyone who thinks breaking his family’s heart or trapping a woman in marriage to such a fuckingmonster. . . well, you’re not the person I thought you were, Marcus.”

He spoke a word in his language, and suddenly, she was faced with two armed fae guards. They didn’t touch her, but they blocked her path. And while Allie was a resourceful woman, she wasn’t ready to resort to violence against people who were simply doing their jobs.

“Move.”

They didn’t reply--or move out of her way.

Allie pivoted. “So help me, Marcus. You’re crossing the wrong woman right now. . . . Tell them to get out of my way.”

Athudsounded behind her as the door fell shut.

“They are out of your way.” He stepped closer, approaching her warily but still approaching her. “It’s just us here, my love.”

When she looked over her shoulder, there were no guards. At least, there were none on this side of the door. “Sharing your true colors, I see.”

“You are angry,” Marcus started.

“You think?” She tried waving her bracelet in the air to open a doorway, but he caught her hand and slid the circlet from her arm.

Allie backed out of his touch, hating that even as he enraged her she felt like he left fire on her skin.

“I know you are upset about these things, but you cannot leave me, Alice.” Marcus gave her a sad look. “There are no longer heirs toElphame. And you, my love, are the woman I’ve waited for my entire life.”

“Go to hell.”

He let out a long sigh. “Let me take you to your chambers, Alice. When you are calm, we can discuss this again.”

Alice was fairly sure she had never been this infuriated in her entire life, and for any woman with a speck of self-respect, there were eight hundred and thirty-seven reasons to be spitting mad on an average day.

“Your throne will turn to dust, Marcus of Stonecroft, before I let you so much as touch my foot.” Allie shook her finger at him. “You might be easy on the eyes, but I will not sully my body with a liar. Now let me go home.”

“Faeries don’t lie,” he pointed out. “And youarehome. In time, you will calm, and then you will see what foolishness this is.”

Allie hissed. It was all she could do not to scream, and the noise slipped between her teeth like a warning from something deadly.

“Call it what you want, Marcus, but hiding things from me is the same as lying to me,” Allie said, voice level finally. “I want to go back to my home. My job. My things. People Ilike.”

He offered her his arm, as if her rage was no more than a snit, and it took all of her self-control not to slap him again.

“You came here, and you will stay here. This is my domain, Alice, and you will remain here where I can be certain of your safety.”

GENEVIÈVE

Back inside my home, I looked around and smothered a gasp. My home was in shambles, and Iggy was pacing like a tiger in a cage.

Eli, however, had me wrapped in his arms, and though my husband was not particularly fond of public displays of affection, his mouth covered mine and he kissed me so thoroughly that I was ready to ignore the disaster that was our current situation and pull him into a private corner.
