Her friends had told her she could be cold, but compared to Captain Jones, she was like a summer breeze. The man must have ice in his veins. Even after he’d spanked her, his expression had remained distant. Her reaction had been the exact opposite, and it grated that she had been so affected while he had not been.

If she was alone, she would already have her hand between her legs, rubbing herself. Josie and Mary’s descriptions of being spanked and the aftereffects were far more accurate than she had thought they would be. She had made an exploration of her body and read quite a few books about sexual relations—including a fascinating one with pictures from India that had been tucked away in her favorite bookstore—but none of her previous explorations had made her feel as desperate as she did right now.

Had a man been the missing element?

What a lowering thought… especially considering the man in question.

Perhaps it was truly the spanking she had responded to and not the man. That would certainly be preferable.

Would it really?

Lily hesitated. In this case, yes. Though still uncertain why she had reacted that way… Surely, that could not be the case for every woman, or there would be no need for a secret club where members could indulge in such activities.

Clearly, she would need to try it again. With a different partner, preferably one who did not infuriate her.

Though she was unsure of whether she would be welcome at the Society of Sin as a debutante. Perhaps this was one way Captain Jones had helped her. Surely, a society dedicated to sin would be willing to accept a ruined debutante among its members. If she was going to be tarnished with assumptions, she might as well make them true and enjoy herself.

Especially since one of her best friends was its founder and another best friend was a member with her husband. They could help her pick out a good partner for her experiments with sin and pleasure. Someone other than Captain Jones. Even if he was handsome and being over his knee had set her body aflame.

There must be other handsome men who could ignite the same fire within her.

Bending over to set down the sheets, Lily made a small growling noise under her breath. Whoever decided to push the bed up against the wall rather than leaving space to walk around it had certainly not been thinking in terms of convenience.

“I’m going to get us some water,” the captain said abruptly.

Lily straightened, turning to see him scoop up a bucket and stride over to the door, opening it and walking out into the rain.

Her mouth dropped open.

The man was completely nonsensical. He’d just gotten dry!

Do I have time to… No. No.

If being spanked by him had been embarrassing and her reaction shameful, him coming in to find her with her hand between her legs, trying to give herself some relief from those reactions… The very thought had her body turning hot and cold in equal measure. Absolutely not. She was not actually ruined yet and would fight against that fate until there was nothing left to do. She would not give in before she even knew if there was a chance she might continue on as she had.

Shaking her head, she finished making the bed. He still wasn’t back, so she made a small pallet on the floor with blankets as best she could. He returned when before she was finished.

“Why did you not stick your arm out with the bucket?” Her tone was more than a little aggrieved as she looked down at the water he had dripped across the floor when he’d returned to his previous stance in front of the fireplace… since he needed to dry offagain.

“I wanted to check on Merlin.” He stared into the fire, not looking at her as if she was unimportant. Certainly less important than his horse.

Though her heart did go out to the poor creature. It was not truly cold, thankfully, despite the rain, but she doubted the accommodations were comfortable and did not have any food for the animal, unless… She glanced at the hardtack.

“Do you think Merlin would like some of this?” she asked, picking it up.

Captain Jones finally glanced up, looking to see what she was talking about. Something in his expression changed. Softened, if ice could soften.

“Yes, once we dampen it, I will see if I can get him to eat some.” He glanced at the bucket of water by his feet. “We should move some of this into cups for us to drink before soaking the hardtack.”

The short conversation, then getting the food ready, finally allowed her body to quiet. Sitting down and feeling the soreness of her bottom made her blush again. Thankfully, he did not seem to notice. Over dinner, they talked about innocuous subjects, such as their friends.

Things like spankings, the Society of Sin, and the traitor they were hunting were not mentioned.

She sincerely hoped that was not because she was alone in a cottage with the traitor in question.
