My initial thoughts turned to Kyle but what if it was something worse? Someone trying to make a point. Had someone been followingme? Enough to know that I cared about her? With the amount of enemies we must have the possibilities are endless. Was someone angry about our union with the Compano’s?

I stop at the red light and rain drops splatter on my windshield, pulling me back to that night…when I did the unthinkable, and took her brother from her. I knew it was over then. My father and I did what we could to make it right though.

He got his lawyer to push the papers through at an exponential rate and on paper she was adopted. In the real world, she was free. And she wanted nothing else from us, from me.

She wouldn’t take any the things I wanted to offer her in an attempt to make sure she was taken care of. It was the least I could do. It was all I could do.

I tried to contact her for a while, to check on her, get her things that she needed, but she ignored me, so I was forced to find other ways to see her. Ways that might not have been conventional.

Her efforts to take nothing else from us…things she desperately needed were in vein. I just had the furniture delivered. She got her own car with Danny’s savings or I would have gotten her that as well.

I watched her receive all of them, her face tightening into something so distasteful, unhappy, offended. But in the end, she’d take it. She knew deep down, she needed it. It wore out it’s welcome soon though. After receiving items for weeks, she texted:

Please. Please leave me alone. It hurts too much. It’s just a reminder of everything that’s gone. Let me move on.

I wince as my stomach feels like a punch is delivered. That text still hurts to this day.

Of course, I did as she asked. I loved her that much. Enough to punish myself for eternity to give her a chance at happiness and the past two years have been the longest, coldest I’d ever experienced.

I’d had enough. Watching her, following her, seeing her without being seen had been no easy task, but it was worth it. Always worth it. And now my time in the shadows was over.

I watch her headlights closely the entire ride to the house, and a sigh of relief blows out of my chest as she finally pulls in the long driveway with me. We’re almost there. She’s almost secured, protected, safe.

I park my Cadillac and direct her to pull into the garage to the side of the house. After he car is tucked away, with the garage door shut and locked we head in the side door to the house and I hear a long breath release from her.

It’s been a long time.

As if she reads my mind she repeats the thought.

“It’s been a long time.”

One side of my tight, nervous lips tick up and I let out a low chuckle.

“This way,” I lead my precious firefly through the kitchen, stopping at the island. “Drink?”

“Water is fine,” she stretches her arms along the marble countertop and climbs onto a stool.

I grab a glass from the cabinet, filling it with ice and water from the fridge and slide it her way. She gulps it down, fast and my eyes widen a bit.

“Sorry, all this stress and crying dried me out.”

I purse my lips together biting my tongue as I grin and keep my dirty thoughts to myself.

I’ve got something she drink down.

I grab a short glass off the display and the bottle of whiskey in the corner, I pour it straight, no ice, and think about all the things I want to say to her, do with her, but know that she probably needs to rest.

“Do you want to sleep?”

She shakes her head, “can’t, not after that.” She bites her plump bottom lip and my dick twitches. “Can we just talk? For a while?”

I grin and nod quietly, swinging an arm toward the living room asking her to lead the way.

As I trail behind her, I finally see just how much of a woman she’s grown into. Her red hair swings delicately along the top of her back leaving a trail of her scent and I lap it all up. Her hips sway slightly, in a way that she’s unaware of, but plenty noticeable to a guy like me. Each ass cheek plumps in her pants with each step and I imagine the flesh of each one in my hands as she rocks on top of me.

She curls up on the couch and a flash of her in that exact pose from that summer sends shockwaves through me.

“So,” I take a swig of the potent liquid in my glass, “do you have any ideas who the note is from?”
