She gave me a small smile. “Now why did we get the SOS in the middle of the night?”

And boy was that a loaded question. I probably had many things that inspired that text but caving to Landon and sharing my bed was the one that triggered my need to talk to the girls.

“Oh,” Jurnee squealed, then clapped. Yup, she actually clapped, practically bouncing in her seat. She reminded me of her five-year-old daughter for a second. “Landon and your honeypot,” she leaned in and whispered.

Thank gosh for the whisper, but Summer’s groan was not quiet.

“Hey, can we keep it PG?” she asked. “It is my brother we’re talking about.”

I saw her body shiver at the thought of what she might hear, and I laughed. Jurnee followed along and Summer gave us both a dirty look, which just caused more giggles.

“You said you were there for me through anything, so brace yourself,” I told Summer.

Then for the rest of lunch, I proceeded to tell all about mine and Landon’s escapades, hoping they could tell me what the hell I was supposed to do.

“I’m pooped,”I said out loud.

The three of us had shopped until we dropped. We did happen to make it to a chair in the food court where we had grabbed some much-needed coffee. All three of us needed the caffeine after that and before we headed home.

We sat in silence for a while sipping our java and taking in the people milling around from one direction to another doing their thing. Some looked like they were on a mission, while others looked relaxed just having a leisurely outing. But at the end of the day, who really knew what each person might be going through. Someone else could be feeling just like me.

“I had something I wanted to talk to you guys about,” Summer chirped happily.

I noticed she then tried to mask her enthusiasm before she went on. “I wasn’t going to bring it up today, but waiting isn’t an option so here it goes.” She pulled in a breath and with a small smile, she said, “Gyth and I want to get married next month. I couldn’t wait too long to tell you guys since it would be here before you know it.”

It hurt my heart that she was worried about being excited over getting married and probably worrying about the house situation since she had already talked with me about it before. She should be happy, ecstatic, and over the moon, not trying to tone all her emotions on my account.

“Girl, get your ass out of that chair and give me a hug,” I told her as I stood. “Don’t you ever not show your true feelings on my account. This is freakingamazingnews.”

Rising, she threw herself into my awaiting arms and hugged me tight.

“It’s just the house and everything you have going on. I didn’t want to add any more stress,” she mumbled, her head shoved in my shoulder.

I playfully swatted her backside and then leaned back, breaking our hold.

“Don’t make me do that again,” I smiled. “I will be fine and the two of you deserve this.”

I couldn’t be more pleased with the man my girl had found. He took care of her and would do anything for Summer.

“Maybe you will be,” she said with a wink. “You are not alone in that house anymore and I don’t think my brother is going anywhere anytime soon.”

Just then, Jurnee got up and joined us where we stood.

“Yeah, and if he keeps dipping in the honeypot, she won’t be able to turn him away,” she said, giggling like a schoolgirl.

“Not another word about that,” Summer said in a pained voice.

We all laughed and then I called out for a group hug. Wrapping our arms around each other three ways, I said, “One might not be able to pick their family or their neighbors but thank heavens we can pick our friends. And boy did I choose well with you two.”

Before anything else was said, my arm was grabbed from behind, and I was yanked away from my friends. Stumbling back as whoever had a hold of me let go, I fumbled with my footing trying not to fall on my ass.Been there, done that enough recently.

“You fucking home-wrecking, bitch!” a voice screamed from behind me.

As I got my balance, I swiveled around at the high-pitched sound and the very pissed-off woman behind me. She was disheveled and looked as though she hadn’t slept in a long time. This woman was in the midst of a psychotic break. That was obvious just by looking at her. Why she had zeroed in on me, I didn’t know.

What the hell?
