Bridgette sputtered at his words and I just nodded. Kace took my hands in his and just stayed as he was for a few seconds. I stared into his eyes and saw so much hurt and anger. He had been there for me and I wanted nothing more at that moment than to do the same for him. I glanced around at everyone standing around, taking in the scene, and got myself under control. It was my turn to be strong for Kace because whatever was about to happen was not going to be easy on him.

That was clear.

Giving his hands a gentle squeeze, I said, “I’m okay. How about you?”

He bent his head slightly and shook it from side to side. I don’t know what the hell had gotten into me but I let go of his hands and cupped both his cheeks in my palms. His head snapped up, his eyes sparkling with surprise.

“I’m here,” I whispered.

I knew that the woman had lied to me without asking and whatever reason she had come was not something Kace wanted to deal with, but it looked like his past had caught up with him. I shivered at the thought that one day that was going to be me.

“What the hell is going on?” Bridgette asked.

“Lady—” Alley started but Kace jumped up, causing my hands to fall away.

I found myself missing the contact of his stumbled cheeks in my hands. There seemed to be a lot of new feelings happening that day.

“Alley, I got this. It’s okay,” he said as he approached everyone on the other side of the desk.

Hearing his anger-laced tone, I forgot about the touch and focused on what was happening right in front of me.

“Fine, but if I had my bat I would use it right now,” Alley said, clearly ticked off.

Braxton and Gyth stood just off to the side monitoring the situation, scowls on both of their faces. They didn’t jump in but you could see they would if needed. They also looked as confused as I did. The only person who seemed to know what may be about to go down or anything about the situation was Alley. And that only came after she learned the woman’s name and that she had come to see Kace. She also looked like she wanted to deck the woman.

Now that I had seen Kace, even not knowing what was happening, I felt like smacking the lady and I had never so much as hit anyone in my life. I had been hit enough when not deserved and violence scared me, but something screamed that this woman had it coming.

“Bridgette, I don’t know what you are doing here, but you are not welcome. You need to leave now!” Kace told her, his voice raised and mad.

“You can’t just ignore me and your family forever. We were engaged, Kace, and I want to work things out.”

So she had lied about being his fiancé now, but she was at one time. I couldn’t help but wonder what happened because it certainly looked like this woman had done something to hurt Kace. I hated seeing the torment in his eyes as he stood there listening to her.

“Can we go talk somewhere privately?” she asked.

“No!”

“But—”

Bridgette didn’t get to finish what she had been about to say. When Kace said no and she wouldn’t listen, my pulse picked up and I snapped. No meant no when someone said it and I had been on the receiving end of people not listening when I had said it in the past. I also hadn’t been brave enough to assert myself either.

I jumped to my feet, wobbled a little, still dizzy, and headed toward Kace’s side as I spoke.

“He said no, lady. When someone says no, listen to them. And coming in here and telling me you were his fiancé was just awful.”

At that, Kace’s eyes blazed with fury.

This woman needed to leave, so looking over at Braxton and Gyth I said, “Don’t you think it is time for her to leave?” I asked as Alley flanked one side of me, giving me a proud smile.

Then with appreciation gleaming in their eyes, both men nodded their heads, but it was Braxton who spoke.

“Ma’am, we’re going to have to ask you to leave the premises.”

“You have to be freaking kidding me. Kace we need to work this out,” she said, sounding desperate as she attempted to plead to him one more time.

But when Braxton and Gyth both started toward her, she started for the door.

Just before she walked out she landed a doozie that had everyone stunned by the looks of it. Except for Alley once again.
