She was nowhere to be found.
What had I expected? It had taken me longer than she probably wanted to wait. I’d noticed how tired she was getting as the days went on and by evening on the ride home she would sometimes doze off in the truck. But what if even though she had jumped to my defense, she’d decided the whole situation wasn’t something she wanted to get mixed up in? Even though I hated the thought, I was more concerned with how she got home. If the guys or Alley let her take the bus, I would be having words with them.
I started to head back down the hall to ask the men when she left and how she got to her place, when the sweetest voice called out to me, stopping me in my tracks. Desire flushed through me, whether appropriate or not. I couldn’t stop my body's reaction to her anymore.
“Are you ready to head home or do you have more to do?”
Turning to face her, I just stared.
“What’s wrong?” she asked
“You waited,” I said, my voice filled with surprise.
“Kace, of course I waited,” she told me, sounding puzzled.
A smile broke out across my face as I moved toward her. I didn’t crowd her as I got near, giving her plenty of space. I’d learned my lesson before and wanted her to feel safe. Even if everything inside me wanted to press closer to her. Especially, at her next words, which in truth floored me.
“That smile should be illegal.” As the words left her pretty, pink lips, her eyes went wide and her hand flew to her mouth.
Teal didn’t say stuff like that and it seemed to come as a shock to her too. For me, it just made me smile bigger and that desire got stronger. I laughed then and as usual changed the subject, letting her off the hook whenever I could tell she got nervous.
“Come on, Little Momma, let’s get you home.” I gestured toward the doors.
I swear I could hear the breath of relief swoosh out of her and had to hold back the laughter bubbling up, ready to break free. She veered toward her desk, grabbing her coat and purse before heading to the front entrance. Following behind as we went out, I made sure the door was locked but didn’t set the alarm. Braxton and Gyth were still inside so they would do that when they left.
When we reached my rig I went to her side and opened the door. With her being pregnant and on the smaller side, it wasn’t as easy for her to get in. This was one place she always seemed prepared for me to touch her and help her a little, after having asked the first few times if she needed help. Now she always paused and waited for me to give her some assistance.
After running around and getting in the driver’s side, I started the truck but paused before taking off, still thinking about how she hadn’t left.
“Why did you wait so long for me? I am sure Alley would have been happy to take you home.” I turned in my seat a little to look at her when I asked the question and when her eyes met mine my heart thumped almost out of my chest.
Her beauty took my breath away.
Then she spoke and I did lose all the oxygen in my lungs because it was the sweetest damn thing anyone had said to me and yet it was only one simple sentence. Having it come from her made it that much more special.
“She offered, but I wanted to ride with you,” she told me softly.

I stared at her sleeping form and took her in. Really took her in.
After her comment, I was speechless. I’d put the truck into drive and we started out in silence and then she’d fallen asleep. I was on autopilot the whole time and was surprised when we pulled into our building.
The first time my gaze landed on Teal I was mesmerized by her eyes and instantly drawn to her. But now it was as if my mind, heart, and soul felt and saw so much more. With my head clearer and not stuck in the past, I wasn’t being held back from moving on. And so everything about Teal was staring me right in the face.
Her small frame was gorgeously round with child, her sparkling, teal-colored eyes, shiny, brown hair that curled just past her shoulders, and her pale, creamy skin. Was it as soft and smooth as it looked? And although on the shorter, petite side, the woman still had curves. I couldn’t help noticing her fuller hips, which made my mind wonder what the rest of her would look like under her clothes. As my mind started to imagine her breasts, I worked to shut down all my thoughts.
Fuck I needed to watch myself. I would be nothing but a gentleman and her friend, but I was even more drawn to her now than I had been a few months ago.
It wasn’t just her beauty either. Teal was sweet, she had shown that tonight. She was also protective, something I think even surprised her. And she could also be funny, another thing I had learned little by little since her moving into my building and letting her guard down with me some. But I had also opened up to her and had stopped hiding all the time.
“Are we home?” She asked sleepily, her groggy-filled voice another thing to add to the list of things I liked.
Just as I was about to answer, her tummy rumbled loudly. Her cheeks flushed red of embarrassment as they always did when that happened, which seemed to be a lot. My cheeks however were hot with anger.
