“Are you going to keep checking me out or should we go get some breakfast?”

His eyes were closed so how in the heck did he even know I was looking at him, much less what I was thinking? My face heated at the idea that he’d caught me somehow thinking of his rugged good looks at the same time my stomach rumbled at the wordbreakfast.

His deep chuckle vibrated through the room. “Breakfast it is then.” He cracked one eye open and smirked.

Trying hard not to think about how cute that was, I looked away and slowly got to my feet.

“I can make something,” I told him.

He shook his head. “How about I take you out to breakfast?”

“Go out?” I said, whipping my head back around to look at him.

“You know your whole face crinkles up when you’re confused, it’s cute. And yes, go out. Like two people needing some grub and we do it together,” he said with a smirk.

Great, now my face was all messed up, my stomach was making noises, and I was probably redder than a tomato. Then my precious little one kicked me hard. I took that as breakfast won this round.

“Food sounds heavenly,” I said. “But I need to shower and change.”

A big smile on his face, Kace said, “You bet. I’ll go to my place and do the same. I’ll be back.” He jumped out of the chair and headed toward the door. “Lock this behind me.”

That’s when the previous night came rushing back and panic started to flare a little all over again.

Kace was back in front of me. “Nobody is coming in, Teal. This building is safe and if it will make you feel better, I’ll have more equipment installed on your windows and a camera at the front door.” His eyes searched mine and I got lost in their brown depths for a second until he spoke again. “Will that help you feel safer?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“Okay, I will make it happen. Now come lock up. Everything is going to be okay.”

I followed him to the door but something was causing me to pause. He hadn’t said a word about what I told him last night just before I fell asleep. Before I could think better of it, I opened my mouth and my thoughts came tumbling out.

“You're not even going to ask me about last night?” I said, assuming he would know exactly what part I was talking about.

He turned his hand on the doorknob. “When you are ready to tell me more, I’m here.”

I didn’t know what to make of Kace. He and Thad were like oil and water, night and day, they were not alike at all and it threw me for a loop in the best possible way. But it scared me too. Not in the way that Thad did but knowing that I could get used to having him around. And maybe one day that wouldn’t be possible anymore.

Not saying anything, Kace just let it sink in and pulled the door open. “Remember to lock up,” he said again.

So, I did as he said. What other choice did I have? This is where I lived and soon my child would too. I’d have to get over my fears. It wasn’t like I could keep Kace in my chair forever watching over me.

But that did sound kinda nice, I thought as I shut the door behind him and flipped the locks.

He made me feel safe.

The morning sunshined bright as we walked to Kace’s truck.

“Where are we going?” I asked as we approached the front of his vehicle.

When he stopped, I did too. “I know this really amazing cafe that serves the best breakfast. Their plates are piled high with food,” he said with a wink, as his eyes glanced down at my once again noisy stomach.

Brat.

“You good with that?”

I think they got it wrong when they said, ‘A way to a man's heart is through his stomach.’If Kace kept feeding me there was a very good chance my heart might just go to mush. I needed to keep it locked up tight.
