So, I hadn’t spoken to him yet but Kace had. I knew the conversation they had wasn’t easy for him because he struggled with how my father had treated me. But Kace said he would do anything for me, so whatever I decided to do he was fully behind me. Just like how I supported him in his choices with his family.

To say my father was shocked to get a call from Kace after all these years explaining where I’d been and everything that had happened was an understatement. He said he’d gotten sober two years after I’d left and had broken down on the phone while talking to Kace. There were many things he would like to say to me if or whenever I was ready to talk.

Deep down I knew I would end up calling. My father may have turned out to be a terrible man, but for the first fourteen years of my life, he had been my daddy. And when I thought about how broken my heart was over losing my mother, and knowing how in love they were, it was hard not to understand why he’d lost himself after she died.

I played with her wedding ring around my neck. It made me feel closer to her and I always needed that, but my father seemed to want to forget everything—including me. Now that I was older I knew that people coped with things in a different way. I also knew that for the first time I was experiencing what love truly felt like and couldn’t imagine ever losing Kace like my father lost my mother.

Denver let out a small whimper from the backseat dragging me from my thoughts and then settled again just as Kace pulled off the road onto a long driveway, the vibrant green, sprawling yard surrounded by a white picket fence. I thought I knew every one of his friends, at least the people he spent time with, but I didn’t know of anyone who would live—

I stopped thinking and sucked in a breath as the house came into view.

It was a huge, white, two-story home with shiny black shutters and a massive wrap-around porch. A white wooden swing with red and white checkered pillows placed in each of its corners swayed in the slight breeze. Colorful flowers lined the front of the home making it cheery and beautiful. I could only imagine what the inside looked like if just the front of the place was that magnificent.

“Who lives here?” I asked Kace as he pulled right up to the house. I looked around, but there wasn’t a car in sight.

I looked over at him as he parked but instead of answering he got out of the vehicle and came around to the passenger side. Before coming to me, he opened the back door on his extended cab and took Denver out as I stayed in my seat, gawking at the home.

My dream house.

Kace pulled open my door, baby in one arm, and held out his other hand for me. Taking it, I climbed from the truck. He kept my hand in his and walked me closer to the house.

“Kace, what’s going on?”

He stopped just in front of the porch steps and turned to face me, so I did the same. Did he look nervous? I couldn’t tell what was going on in his head. Something was up with him.

Dropping my hand, he held the baby out for me to take. I took Denver from his arms and cradled him in mine.

“Honey, whose house is this?”

He reached in his pocket, pulled out a small square box, and dropped to one knee. I sucked in a breath and my eyes went wide with surprise. Then he finally answered my question.

“It’s ours, baby. I just need to convince you and Denver to marry me first.”

It was a good thing he kept talking because I was stunned speechless when he flipped open the box that held the perfect ring. My pulse picked up speed and my knees trembled.

“You did tell me that you would say yes. So, tell me what I want to hear, Little Momma.”

I stared down at the sparkling heart-shaped diamond ring, surrounded by tiny diamonds making a second heart around the center stone. The smooth white gold band was adorned with more little diamonds around the band. It was elegant, romantic, and absolutely stunning.

It could be mine.

The man kneeling in front of me could be mine.

And the house could beours.

All I needed to do was say one word.

“Yes.”

Kace let out a huge breath of air he’d been holding as he awaited my answer and then jumped up with the exuberance of a child and the smile on his face matched. He looked like a kid, happy as a clam in a candy store.

“Give me your finger, baby.”

I adjusted Denver in my arms and held out my left hand. As he stared into my eyes and slid the ring on my finger, my heart pounded at the love beaming brightly in his gaze. He needed to know something though.

“Kace…” I paused trying to find the right words. He looked at me now with concern so I hurried on so he didn’t think I was having second thoughts.

“If we didn’t have the house and I didn’t have the ring, I would still be the luckiest woman in the world. Because all I need is you.”
