As a family.

“I have to get a picture of the three of you,” Jurnee said. “You look so cute together.”

As she took our picture, Kace kept whispering, “I love you,” in my ear and my body tingled as his warm breath tickled me. I’d never get tired of hearing those words.

“You have to tell us about this redhead,” Alley said. You’ve been holding out on us.”

Just as I was about to launch into the story about Lyric and the nurse, movement caught my eye. I glanced over at the other ladies’ shoulders, who happened to have their back to the woman and small boy headed our way. Hand in hand they approached and everyone turned in their direction.

“Hi, umm…” The woman started but seemed unsure of what to say when she noticed so many people, but then she carried on. “I’m looking for Gyth?”

I noticed Summer’s startled reaction, I mean Gyth was her husband after all. But then after studying them for a minute, something clicked. She seemed to know who they were.

Gyth must have noticed and walked over. “Brinley, is everything okay?”

The woman he called by name rubbed her free hand up and down on her jean shorts, clearly nervous as heck. I mean we were all there and it was probably very intimidating. She’d also just shown up unexpectedly in the middle of a party, which probably wasn’t her plan.

Although looking at her, I didn’t think she’d planned much of anything. I’d been there and it looked like she was in trouble or running away from something.

“You said you would help if I needed it,” she whispered.

I knew Gyth and any of the group would do anything they could if this woman and her son needed it, but he didn’t get to say anything before a puzzled voice spoke.

“Brin, what are you doing here?”

Brin?

I said the nickname in my head but could see everyone else’s minds doing the same thing.

“You two know each other?” Gyth asked out loud, waiting for either of them to comment.

The woman looked stunned and couldn’t take her eyes off the man behind me.

“Rowan?” she said, then immediately turned and ran back toward the way she’d come.

“What the fuck?” Gyth said, looking perplexed and upset.

I had no clue what was happening.

“Her husband was my best friend.” It was the only thing he said before he tore off after the Brinley woman.

Everyone stood staring. But I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. I just spit out the first thing I was thinking.

“I don’t know what just happened. But it looks like we might havetwobig projects in the works.”

“Projects?” my husband asked, still wrapped around me like a monkey. Which felt damn good.

“Matchmakings. But it looks like the one that just wandered off is going to need our attention first,” I muttered, talking about Rowan and the woman. “Lyric may just have to wait.”

Alley caught on quickly, then the other ladies' faces registered my words.

“I like the way you think, girlfriend,” Alley said.

“Here we go again, but this time it’s Little Miss Innocent,” Summer said, pointing at me, “that’s leading the pack.”

“What the hell are we talking about here?” Gyth boomed, totally lost.

“We are talking about love, Big Guy,” Summer told her husband.
