Those magical eyes of his told me something big was brewing and I was a little scared. Not of Rowan, but for what was coming.

“Rowan,” I whispered.

His shoulders tensed. “I have to go, even if I don’t want to.” He took a deep breath trying to control some sort of war going on inside him. But seconds later the battle was lost.

Rowan’s mouth crashed down on mine and claimed my lips in a frantic, desperate, mind-blowing kiss. My eyes closed and I moaned into his mouth. Bringing my hands up, I gripped his shirt in my fists, pulling him closer to me so there was no space at all.

Our tongues tangled, and I nipped his lower lip. For the second time that evening, a deep growl rumbled from the depths of his soul and he pulled back, breaking the kiss. Close to crying in outrage, my eyes popped open.

Rowan was staring at me, both of us panting, and our breaths mixing as one. His woodsy scent surrounded me and I felt intoxicated by the smell and the taste of him still on my lips as my tongue darted out to swipe across them.

“If I didn’t have to leave I wouldn’t,” he said in a gruff voice.

“Okay.” My mind and body were in overdrive still and I couldn’t say much more. I wasn’t sure what the hell had just happened.

All I knew was that it felt incredible and whether it was smart or not I wanted a repeat.

“I really have to go. I told Braxton I was on my way.” He looked as disappointed about leaving as I felt. “I will be right back with the other gifts. Lock up until I get back and I’ll knock three times so you know it’s me. But make sure you also check the peephole before opening.”

Rowan was acting strange. I mean he’d told me many times to do the same thing, but something in his gaze and tone came off differently that time.

“What’s wrong?” I rushed to ask.

“Maybe nothing. We’ll talk later. I’ll text you when I get home, okay?”

I could tell something was going on, but also that he needed to leave so I didn’t push.

“Promise?” I didn’t mean to ask him that, it just slipped out. He’d made Zander a promise, but that was different. I’d told myself I would never ask him to promise me anything because my heart couldn’t take him breaking his word. But before I could take it back he replied.

“I promise, Buttercup. I will text you when I get back. If you need anything, call my phone.”

He dropped his hand from my face and then said he’d be right back as he moved toward the door. Then, he was gone.

This time he was only absent for a few minutes, but after the kiss we’d shared, it felt like an eternity and even longer than the first time.

Once he knocked three times and I checked the peephole, he walked in and laid the rest of the presents on the table with the others. Still in a fog, I followed him toward the door as he went to leave for the third time.

He put his hand on the knob, but then dropped it and turned toward me. With not much space between us, he reached over and cupped my cheeks with both of his hands.

“Lock up. I’ll talk to you later. Promise.” He kissed my forehead softly and once again turned to leave.

As he walked out the door, he said, “What just happened with us… It’s not over, Buttercup.” With a flirtatious smirk, he waited for me to shut the door.

My face turned pink as I closed it and threw the locks into place.

I heard him mumble, “Good Girl,” from the other side of the door and sighed.

Did the man have to be sexy even when he was being bossy?

ChapterTwenty-One

ROWAN

I screechedto a halt in front of Braxton’s house.

Driving probably hadn’t been a good idea. Between being filled with rage over what I’d found on my truck when I went to get Zander’s gifts and the lust racing through me after the explosive kiss Brinley and I shared, I wasn’t in the right state of mind. But I’d made it and now I needed my friend to weigh in on the note clenched in my hand before I lost my shit completely.

The door flew open and Braxton stood there urging me to come in. I hadn’t even remembered getting out of my truck and approaching his house. Once I stepped into the entryway, I waved the paper in the air and then lost it.
