ROWAN

When my phonerang and I saw Brin’s number, I answered.

It didn’t matter if I was in the middle of a meeting with the guys, I was worried. It had been a couple of weeks since our first date and we’d fallen into our own routine with just the three of us. And Brin didn’t often call when she knew I was working.

Zander was with her each day because he wouldn’t start Kindergarten until the next fall. Embry and Dexter were already in school so playdates happened once they were home. But with Brin working for Alley they happened to see each other more regularly in the daylight hours. She was getting more and more comfortable with all the ladies and true friendships were in place.

It was great to see.

We had dinner together every night if I hadn’t needed to stay late at work and we spent weekends together too. The three of us were becoming a tight family unit. And while there had not been any more threats toward me, Brin, or Zander, I wasn’t going to let my guard down and assume the issue had gone away. We still didn’t know who it was so it was an active case as far as anyone was concerned.

“Hey, sweetheart, what’s going on?”

Only it wasn’t Brin.

“Daddy!” Zander cried. “Someone hit our car! You have to help us.” His breathing was coming in fast pants across the line. “Please, Daddy.”

My world spun and a million scenarios raced through my head.

“Son, it’s going to be okay. Where is your mother?” My pulse raced as I waited for him to reply. I stormed out of the conference room, the sound of booted feet pounding behind me, but I was paying my friends no mind. All I could think of was getting to my family.

I put my phone on speaker as I fumbled to pull up the find my phone app so I could see where they were at.

“She is driving and trying to get away from the bad person!” Zander's voice was full of fear and I was right there with him.

I was scared to fucking death.

“Mommy t-told me to c-call you,” he said, bawling hysterically. It made it harder for me to understand him, but I was getting the message.

One that had me going berserk.

I heard Brinley in the background murmuring to our son as she tried to soothe him, but I could still hear the panic in her voice. She was trying to get away from God knows who and probably terrified as hell, but her first priority was Zander.

My vision blurred for a second and I had to concentrate to keep myself upright as I raced to my truck.

“Bub, can you put the phone on speaker so I can talk to your mother?” I felt like I was coming unhinged.

“Y-Yess.”

There was a pause and then his next words had my knees hitting the asphalt a few feet from my vehicle.

“Daddy, please don’t let us die!”

Oh God, not again. I can’t lose anyone else.

The phone crackled and then Brin was on the line

“Rowan!” she called out over the loud revving of an engine. “Someone is—”

Brin and Zander let out a piercing scream at the same time as the crunch of metal rang in my ears.

“Talk to me, baby!” I shouted, frantically, jumping to my feet.

I heard sobbing, glass shattering, and tires screeching.

Brin yelled out for our son.

And then there was nothing but silence.
