I reached up and laid my hand on my son’s back, needing to touch him. Things could have gone even worse tonight.

“Don’t go there, Brin. You protected our son and you’re amazing,” Rowan said, placing his hand over mine where it lay on Zander.

Even with my head feeling as if someone was banging a cast iron pan against it repeatedly, I could tell that Rowan was working to keep his cool so he could soothe both Zander and me. I appreciated it more than I could say, but not going off the road at all or knowing someone was watching us before we left that night would have made me feel better.

It would be hard not to beat myself up about it for a while.

I started to close my eyes once more and I heard the EMT tell Rowan he needed to try and keep me awake until we got to the hospital and got checked out because he thought I had a concussion.

“Baby, open your eyes. You need to stay awake.”

I attempted to do as he asked, but it wasn’t working. My body was so tired and I just wanted to sleep for a few minutes.

“I love you, Brin.”

My eyes snapped open and I sucked in a gulp of air.

That woke me up.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

ROWAN

I neededto get her attention and it seemed to do the trick.

But I meant each word as if they were my last.

I loved her.

So damn much.

And I loved my son too.

Brinley lay in stunned silence as we finished our trip to the hospital, words not leaving her beautiful mouth until we’d gotten inside and they wanted to take our son to another room to check him over.

That’s when Mama Bear showed her claws.

Her son was not leaving her sight; she'd roared, making sure everyone there knew it. I couldn’t help but chuckle, she was absolutely marvelous to watch when she was on a rampage.

Truth was, she was something special to see all the time.

When she glared at me, I had to hide my smirk with a cough or I knew there’d be hell to pay.

I leaned in and kissed the two people that owned my heart before they took them away to look at them. With her son lying next to her, Brin watched me until they were out of my sight.

“Sir, can I ask you a few questions?” a lady at the desk said, drawing my attention.

Before I could move in her direction, a commotion sounded behind me and I swiveled around to see a mass of people coming through the doors as others around them parted like the red sea to let them through.

They were an intimidating group and they demanded attention. Sometimes they could be a little scary too, but they were amazing, caring people, and I knew that was why they’d come.

Family.

Every last one of them was also part of my family. I wasn’t sure how it happened. When my family died and I walked away from Luke and Brinley, I thought for sure I was meant to spend the rest of my days alone.

But the group that came toward me and the two that were waiting for me to come to find them said otherwise.

“Excuse me, Sir.”
