Once she healed I’d convince her to make it official. Or I could just go with Alley’s plan? At least then I’d know she would be safe.

“Can we go home now?” Brin asked. “I hate hospitals.” I saw her quiver and could tell another bout of pain swept through her.

“You’re not going to leave us, right, Daddy? Will you stay at our house?”

The worry in my boy's voice sent my rage skyrocketing again.

My hands clenched wanting to punch something. No, I wanted to punch the someone who put fear in my son. “I promise I will be right there with you both.” My words seemed to ease his mind and he rested his small head on his mother’s shoulder as she rubbed his back.

They let us go after she was all stitched up and with a brace on her wrist. We were given clear instructions that someone needed to stay with her. We were just waiting for a nurse to come back with her discharge paperwork and prescriptions for her pain meds.

“We should be out of here really soon,” I told her, having not answered her question about going home yet.

When I looked into her crystal blue eyes and saw her biting her lip, I wondered what was going on. Usually, I knew what she was thinking, but right then I didn’t.

I didn’t get to find out either. The nurse walked in a second later to give Brinley and Zander their walking papers and wheel them out front.

With Zander perched on Brinley’s lap and me walking along beside them, the friendly nurse escorted us down the hall.

We reached the waiting room and everyone but the little ones that had fallen asleep stood up, happy to finally see Brin and Zander for themselves.

Looking around at the group I was thankful to have them all in our lives. But when my eyes landed on Lyric, it looked like he’d swallowed his tongue. Then I saw Teal nudge Alley and a ‘Told you so’ was murmured, but I didn’t know who said it.

What in the world was going on?

I looked back to see what everyone was staring at and that’s when I noticed the blush on the redheaded nurse's face. I’d totally missed it with everything going on. I wasn’t there the first time Lyric and the nurse met, but I’d heard all about it. Enough sparks were flying to keep the fourth of July going for a whole damn year.

And Lyric thought he was immune from biting the bullet and joining the club? He was full of shit.

“You’re next buddy,” Landon said, clapping Lyric on the back. “I told you that my wife wouldn’t let it go.”

“What did I miss?” Brinley asked.

She couldn’t see the nurse’s face go from blush pink to bright red, but everyone else had. Lyric fidgeted, and because I needed to get my lady home, I saved him.

“I’ll tell you later, baby. It’s time to get you two home.” The nurse nodded and began pushing them to the doors.

As I passed Lyric, I whispered, “That lifeline I just passed you won’t last long. Should just give up now.”

I didn’t wait for his response but heard the guys chuckle and the ladies giggle.

Then Gyth added, “Don’t fight it, brother, it’s no use.”

I smiled to myself thinking he was definitely in for a ride.

We got out to the front and I was glad someone had driven my truck from the scene to the hospital. One of them had also already pulled it up to the loading area. The guys and I were all on alert and checking our surroundings as we got situated in the vehicle, Brinley riding in the backseat with Zander.

Right before we took off I looked back to check on them. It was hard to keep my eyes off of them for fear something else would happen.

Brinley was looking at me in the mirror as if something was still on her mind. I gave her a questioning look and she solved the mystery.

All the air left my lungs and happiness swelled inside me. And my heart, well, it mended as her words sunk in.

“I love you too. Always have.”

“Me too!” Zander exclaimed as he bounced a little in his seat. “I love you both this much,” he added, throwing his arms out to the side, wide. I was glad to see him happy but hoped he didn’t hurt himself or Brin.

Flashing them both with a bright smile, I started the engine.
