“Wait, I have to know. Are you going to give me another chance to meet you?”

“I don’t know. I don’t like being ogled.”

“I’m only human. When a beautiful woman leans over a pool table…” Dom held up his hands in surrender to stop her protest. “And cleans my clock, it’s hard to look away.”

“I’m more than a pair of tits and a nice ass.”

“You sure as hell are, and I want a chance to get to know all those other things about you. That’s why I’m on this blind date. I sure wasn’t expecting you to be this gorgeous. I came because I wanted to get to know you.”

“Hmmm.”

That hum of contemplation crawled right under his skin and made every goosebump stand at attention.

“Eight ball, corner pocket.”

She turned and tapped the table dismissing him.

She had a beautiful clear show, and he’d blown his. He felt something monumental slipping through his fingers as silkily as the cue slipped through hers.

Dom held his breath as the white ball hit the black and rolled across the green baize. The eight ball dropped cleanly into the corner pocket, taking Dom’s heart with it.

But as he watched, a miracle happened. The cue ball followed right behind it. She’d scratched. On purpose. It had to be on purpose. She was too good to lose on accident.

Dom tore his eyes from the table and caught her laughing at him.

“The look on your face was priceless.”

“You scratched.” Dom said, his brain short-circuited and spitting out the obvious.

“I did. Oops.” She shrugged and held out her hand. “I’m Jo.”

He took her hand in his, touching her for the first time. He hand fit perfectly in his, pale gold against his dark tan. He had a flash of insight that he’d be holding this hand for the rest of his life, for better or worse, and everything in between.

“But I’m really not the person you’re meeting tonight.”

“You lost the game.” His brain still hadn’t moved past stating the obvious, but he was desperate to keep her talking.

“Ah, but you didn’t win.” She looked over his shoulder and smiled. “And my actual date just walked in. Thanks for the game.” She pulled her hand from his and racked her cue.

“This isn’t over.”

“It is, judging by the daggers Elena is staring into your back right now. Who’s the redhead?”

Dom glanced over his shoulder to where his brother and his irate girlfriend were sitting with a stranger, who was likely his blind date. He’d been wrong. Or maybe he’d been very very right. “Shit,” he muttered. He turned back to tell Jo that he’d ditch his date if she bailed on hers. But she was already gone, walking towards the door and pulling her actual date into a hug. This couldn’t be right. This wasn’t how fairy tales were supposed to end.

Dom pulled himself together. That could only mean one thing. This wasn’t the end.
