Thorne grinned, running his thumb over Haven’s jutting lower lip. Opening his mouth, he moved in to envelop that lip between his own. Cy saw his tongue jut out to lick at the smooth pink skin, plunging inside Haven’s mouth, claiming, owning, fucking. “My sweet Haven. Always thinking of me.”

“Yes, Master,” Haven stuttered. He held himself rigid, like a kicked dog. Cy almost pitied him.Almost.

“Why don’t you go and rest? I’ll have our pet delivered to your rooms later. I’d like to...inspect him first.” Thorne rose from the bed and offered a hand to Haven. As Haven took to his feet, his gaze darted to Cy and then back to his master. “I won’t harm your new plaything, love. Don’t you trust me? I just want to...investigate him.”

Haven nodded solemnly. He gathered himself without saying a word. Heading to the door, he paused at Thorne’s words. “I’m glad to see you home safely, my love.”

“Thank you, Master,” Haven murmured.

“You’re such a good, beautiful boy,” Thorne whispered, stroking his hair. “Get some rest.”

Haven nodded again and left in silence...leaving Cy alone with Thorne Bathory.

He wouldn’t be afraid. Not of any vampyre. And certainly not of this one.

But eyes the color of blood stared down at him with intensity, cruel lips pulled together in a smile. If he weren’t so intimidating, he might be considered beautiful. But Cy had seen his fangs.

“Did you enjoy the show, pet?”

Cy glared, unwilling to speak. If Thorne meant to sink in his teeth, he wouldn’t get blood without a fight.

Still, Thorne smiled. “Do you expect me to lunge? You’ve seen I’ve already had my fill. Or perhaps you think of all vampyres as insatiable fiends?”

Thorne strode forward, getting to a knee to level himself with Cy. “You were found with the Veritas. Born as a pet but got a taste of freedom. Even slayed your share of vampyres. And now you’re a captive again. It must be incredibly frustrating.”

Cy attempted to keep his breathing steady, to maintain that cold gaze.

“All vampyres were human once,” Thorne murmured. “Though we do so often forget that fact. So many of us learned to hate what we once were. The vampyres saved us, in a way, from ourselves. That is what the Dominion seeks to do. After all, was it not the human’s fault that vampyres gained control in the first place? With their countless wars, the way they ruled over all other creatures and thought so little of our dear Terra. They destroyed this world. So the vampyres rebuilt it, little by little, by taking the humans out of the equation.”

He watched Cy as though attempting to gauge his reaction. Cy would give him nothing.

“Haven hates humans, you know. How could he not? After what they did to him.”

Before he could stop himself, Cy blurted, “What did they do to him?”

Thorne cocked a brow. “Ahh, so he does speak? Of course you’d be interested in our sweet Haven. The vampyre with the face of an angel. You know, you’re not the first human to become enamored with him. He’s so lovely, isn’t he? But make no mistake. Haven hates humans more than any of us, hates in a way that sees no reason. He’s disgusted by your kind. That’s the reason he doesn’t feed. Your blood sickens him; his skin crawls at the contact.”

Cy remained stoic and stubborn. What did this vampyre want? To gloat? To dissuade him of any notions he might have had to pursue Haven? Haven was avampyre. If Thorne assumed that Cy had an interest in anything other than stabbing Haven in the heart with a stake, he was sorely mistaken.

Thorne glanced at the unmade bed where only moments ago, he’d had Haven pinned. “Haven wants to die,” he said solemnly. For whatever reason, Cy’s stomach clenched. “He’s unhappy as a vampyre. Just as he was unhappy as a human. I fear I may lose him.”

Cy swallowed, meeting the vampyre’s hollow gaze. “Are you afraid Haven will...kill himself?”

“My progeny is too afraid to harm himself. As much as he desires death, he also fears it. He wants someone else to do it for him. Probably some superstition held over from his past life. I don’t know. So, he does what he can to bring himself closer and closer to the precipice. He doesn’t feed.” Thorne pinned Cy with a meaningful look. “I want you to keep an eye on him.”

Cy balked. “Me?”

Thorne nodded. “As his pet, you’ll sleep in his chambers, eat your meals and take your baths in his presence. So watch him. Make sure he’s eating enough, that he’s healthy. And while you’re at it, keep track of his activities. Who he’s with, what he’s doing. But more than that, I suspect he will open to you. Eventually, he will soften, perhaps reveal some of his secrets.”

“You just said that Haven hates humans.”

“All humans but one. One that looked so much like you, it’s startling.”

Cy stilled. “Who?”

“That doesn’t matter now. What matters is that Haven is my progeny. My own blood. He’s mine to protect and care for. But I suspect he’s hiding something. I think you can get close to him, pry it from him, and bring that information back to me.”

“Why would I do that for you? What’s in it for me?”
