Their eyes connected. Haven’s cheeks were flushed pink, his skin less pallid and his face less gaunt. The blood, or perhaps the hard fucking, had indeed done him some good. The scowl that seemed permanently etched upon his face whenever he looked at Cy did nothing to deter his beauty.

He sighed. “I’d forgotten.” He glanced at Sirene, who had straightened upon his entrance. “Thank you for escorting him.”

She stood silent and bowed her head. Silence surrounded them.

Cy broke it. “Why did you do that?” he asked, and Haven’s brows shot up. “Why did you say you’d take me? We both know you didn’t want to.”

“Would you rather be auctioned? To someone like Merick no doubt?”

“Why do you care?”

“I don’t.”

“Then why am I here?”

“Because like it or not, you are a gift from Mirae Varney. Thorne may not care about propriety, but I won’t see a relationship we’ve been hard-pressed to cultivate begin to flounder.”

“So you’re telling me that’s all there is to it? Your sense of propriety?”

“Yes,” Haven hissed, moving about the room, unpacking the bags that had been laid on his bed.

“Not because I look like someone you used to know?”

Haven stopped moving, his hands going still. Without turning, he said, “What did you say?”

“Thorne told me that I look like someone you cared about. Who?”

Sirene steadily moved forward, but Haven held out a hand to stop her progress. “That’s none of your business.”

“Was he a human?”

“Enough, slayer! I’m not discussing this with you. In fact, I’m done having conversations with you. You won’t be staying here any longer.”

“Where will I go, then?”

“The pets’ quarters, obviously.”

Cy squared his shoulders, glaring. He couldn’t leave these chambers or he’d lose all opportunities to get close to Haven. The glimmer of his freedom faded further. “No.”

Haven huffed a laugh, full of derision and condescension. “No?”

“If I go there, the other vampyres will hurt me. You said so yourself.”

Cocking a brow, Haven scoffed. “What happened to the confident slayer who attempted escape? Who told me he’d kill me if given the chance?” He finally broke away from his task to face Cy fully and take a step closer.

“What can I do to convince you to let me stay?”

“I’m not interested in anything you have to offer.” Haven turned to Sirene. “Take him. He isn’t to be touched. Anyone who does will answer to me.”

Sirene approached and Cy’s stomach clenched in desperation. “Haven, wait!”

Haven’s eyes widened, and his lips curled into a sneer. “You forget your place, pet. You will address me as Lord Haven or My Lord. You aren’t my equal.” He nodded to his guard. “Take him away.”

“My Lord, please,” Cy begged through gritted teeth. He hated this, hated to lower himself, to be at this vampyre’s mercy. But nothing would get accomplished if he was sent to the pets’ quarters. He needed to stay here. With Haven. He couldn’t let Haven send him away. “I can be of use to you. I can...feed you.”

Haven’s brow furrowed, and his lips pulled together in a tight line. “Feed me?”

“Yes. I’ll feed you willingly. I know you don’t like feeding from humans. But you can have my blood without a fight. I can...make it good for you.” He hated the words as they slopped from his tongue, hated that he had to resort to something so distasteful. But it was his only shot. “I used to be a pet. I know how to make it pleasurable.”
