Cy nodded.

“And is hegood?”Haven asked.

Cy pondered that. Jax was good, but not in the same way that Cy himself wanted to be. He was often selfish, needed taking care of. But he was Cy’s first friend. The person who knew him the most deeply. They’d been through everything together. But that in and of itself didn’t make himgood.

“He’s my closest friend.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Heisgood. He would lay down his life for me. And I for him.”

“Hence why you’re here. Behind bars. Prepared to die to protect him.”

“Yes. But I’ll never give him up. They can torture me, kill me. It won’t matter. All that matters is that Jax is safe.”

“You love him that much?” Haven’s eyes were wide red orbs, as he dried them with his sleeve, watching Cy with a strange expression. An expression that looked almost like awe. He worried his plump bottom lip, leaning close, ever so close.

Cy’s heart picked up its pace. “I love him like a brother. He’s family to me.” But he found he couldn’t feel anything more than that for Jax. And now, looking at the beautiful face in front of him, he thought he might know why.

“He’s lucky to have you then,” Haven whispered, gazing at Cy through the fringe of his golden hair.

“He may never forgive me for dying.”

“He won’t have to.” Haven straightened, pulling away. He reached into the pocket of the black velvet jacket he wore and withdrew a ring of keys.

“What are you doing?”

“You’re not going to die here today, slayer.” He put the key to the lock before Cy grasped his hand, stilling it.

“Haven.” His voice caught. “This is madness. Why are you doing this? You’ll be implicated.”

“Don’t stop me. I may change my mind.”

“You need to change your mind. This is madness.”

Haven looked up at him, big eyes filled with tears. “Then perhaps I’m a madman. But I can’t see him die again.”

“I’m not Tobin.”

“I know who you are, Cypress. And I can’t…keep denying what you make me feel. Besides, nothing I say matters now. We’ll never see each other again after this. Now let go of my hand.”

“What do I make you feel?” Cy’s breath caught. Still, he kept his hold on Haven through the bars.

“Hope,” Haven said after a long moment. “Like maybe there is still some light in all this darkness. I want you to survive. I need you to. Because Tobin didn’t. And it’s all my fault. I think he’d want me to help you.”

Haven wrenched his hand free and began working at the latch. As the hinge gave way with a creak, he held the gate open for Cy. But before he could withdraw again, Cy lunged.

Their bodies crashed together against the hard stone wall, and despite the bruises and cuts on his face, Cy pressed his lips to Haven’s. Groaning beneath him, Haven went still before opening his mouth to allow Cy’s tongue to explore.

Cy relished the moment, the complete submission he felt from Haven, knowing that at any time, Haven could shove him away. But he didn’t. Cy tangled his hands in Haven’s soft golden hair, eliciting a moan from Haven’s open mouth.

“Well, well, well. Isn’t this a surprise?”

Cy’s heart dropped into his stomach. He whirled around to see Merick smiling from the entrance to the dungeons, arms crossed over his chest.

“Who would have guessed that Lord Haven was a slut for vampyresandhuman traitors?”

Haven stood frozen, but Cy filled with rage. “Shut your mouth,” he hissed.
