“Don’t.” Haven fixed him with a hard stare, eyes that warned him to keep his distance. “I can’t...I can’t stop myself right now. You’re covered in—”

In blood. “What if I don’t want you to stop yourself?”

“You don’t know what you’re asking.”

“Yes, I do.” Cy took Haven’s shoulders and switched their positions, pressing him up against the wall. He noticed Haven’s Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat as he swallowed. Leaning in, Cy enveloped Haven’s lips in his own.

He tasted the blood and saliva flowing between them as Haven opened his mouth and allowed Cy inside. Fangs grazed Cy’s tongue but didn’t bite down.

Haven’s mouth began moving down his chin and across his neck, collecting Merick’s blood and sending up goosebumps along Cy’s skin. Haven groaned against him, his hands clutching like claws, digging in everywhere they touched.

Cy’s eyes rolled back in his head as the warmth of Haven’s lapping tongue lulled him into a state of ecstasy. He could forget where they were, what they’d done. Give himself freely to Haven and be done with it all.

He cupped the back of Haven’s head, allowing his fingers to curl through his hair. When Haven finally pulled back, his face was messy and stained with red. He looked monstrous but beautiful, like an angel of mercy…or death.

Licking his lips, Haven met his eyes.

“That’s a neat trick,” Cy whispered, dragging a finger over the freshly healed skin of Haven’s neck.

Haven shuddered beneath his touch. With a sigh, he pulled away, stepping over Merick’s corpse and walking directly into the open cell. Reaching out, he fastened the gate closed behind him. “Lock it,” he said, passing the key ring through the space between the bars.

Cy didn’t move.

“Lock the gate, Cypress. Then follow these halls until you reach a dead end. You’ll see a small hatch. Go through it. It will take you under and out of the castle. Sirene will be waiting for you on the other side.”

“I just leave you here, then?”

Haven nodded. “You have to.”

“I don’t want to.”

Haven chuckled, shaking his head. “We’ll meet again, Cypress.”

“Promise me. I won’t go until you promise me.”

Haven hesitated, then finally steeled himself, pressing his lips together. “I promise.”

Cy stepped forward and took the keyring from Haven’s outstretched hand. He tugged the gate closed, then threw the ring into the opposite corner just out of sight. Haven let out a sigh that was a mixture of relief and stuttered breaths.

“Go, then,” he said.

Before Cy did so, he reached out to pull Haven in for one last kiss. It lingered on his lips, tasting like blood and sweat and Haven.

“I’ll come back for you.”

“Go.”

Cy went.

Cypress

Cy staggered throughthe underground maze, his body revitalized but his mind a mess of turmoil and unwanted emotions. He followed Haven’s directions, his eyes surprisingly able to make out even the smallest details in the darkness. A benefit of Haven’s blood, no doubt.

He was still at a loss for what had happened back there. Haven’s revelations. The murder they’d committed, though one that was long overdue. The kiss they’d shared. Haven had sacrificed himself to save Cy. He’d opened himself completely, baring his soul. Avampyrehad done that. Haven was no ordinary vampyre. Cy had known that for almost as long as he’d known him.

He stumbled over a jutting stone, throwing out his arms to protect himself. The deeper he wove, the darker and more dreary the prison became. The air was thick and stuffy. He began to feel claustrophobic. He needed to get the hell out of here. Right now.
