"Hmm, there are a lot of men to meet in New York, that is for sure." I pressed my lips together. “I’m sure you’ll meet plenty of men. Will one of them be Mr. Right? I don’t know...” I didn’t want to tell her that she had to be careful of the men in NYC. “Most men here are after one thing.”

"Yep, I’m sure they are. But I just need one guy who falls in love with me and wants me.I'm sure he's just waiting for me.Allof me." She sighed dreamily as she looked out of the car window, and I decided to keep my mouth shut. I was pretty sure they’d want all of her as well. But I was pretty confident her definition of all of her didn’t include anal and doggy style, and I didn’t need her to get angry with me again. She’d figure out the truth soon enough. True love was a construct created by corporations to make money. There was no one love or soul mate for anyone, no matter what she wanted to believe.

Chapter4

Rosalie

"Wow, you were right. These are the best tacos I've ever had," I said, licking my lips before taking another bite of my steak taco. "I can't believe they taste so good."

"I’m glad you’re enjoying them," Oliver said with a laugh.

"I didn't even think I liked cilantro and lime, but wow." I looked at him, and I could see his eyes crinkling as he stared at me. "What? What's so funny?" I asked self-consciously as I grabbed some chips and dipped them into the tastiest salsa I’d ever had in my life.

"I just really enjoy watching you eat."

"That sounds weird." I wrinkled my nose. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, here in New York City. A lot of the women who I meet don't like to eat."

"What do you mean they don't like to eat? How do they survive?”

“On lettuce and cucumbers and protein shakes." He chuckled, and I shook my head.

"I guess that's why I'm never going to be super skinny or a model because I enjoy food way too much."

"I know," he said. "I still remember what you used to say as a teenager."

"And what is that?" I asked him curiously, not sure what he was talking about.

"You used to say, I live to eat. I don't eat to live."

"Oh yeah." I nodded. "Alice and I always used to go back and forth on that."

"How is Alice, by the way?" he asked, tilting his head to the side. "I'm surprised she didn't come on this cockamamie journey with you."

"She wanted to." I laughed. "I wanted her too, but you and Foster don't have a big apartment. And her parents were not willing to give her even a penny to come. They're so mean."

"I don't think they're mean. They’re probably just wondering why they spent so much money on her education when she..." He paused. "Well, I guess I shouldn't continue with that sentence, should I?"

"And why is that?" I said, putting my food down and folding my arms across my chest. I stared at him with narrowed eyes. I wanted him to think I was angry with him, but I wasn't. I mean, it was true. Everything that he was saying was true. Alice and I had gotten an expensive education, and it hadn’t led to jobs. We’d followed our passion, and now we were jobless without many professional options.

"I don't want to get in trouble with you again, Rosalie," he said, shaking his head. "I think I'll keep my lips shut."

"Were you going to say, like my parents wasted money on my degree?"

"Well, what is it you’re doing with your English literature degree?" He shrugged. “Has it been helpful at all?”

"I'll have you know that I know things about British authors that you would not even believe."

"Okay, then try me."

"Okay. What do you want to know?"

"Hmm," he said. "How many times was Jane Austen married?"

I stared at him for a few seconds, blinking. "What?"

"You said you know everything about British authors. Right?"
