"Oliver, I don't want a first or a last date with you. I want zero dates with you. I just want food. Good food."

"Okay. So I'm just to take you to an expensive restaurant for you to stuff your face, then we go home, and you watch another crappy rom-com?"

"I told you that movie wasn't crappy. Adam Sandler is a genius actor."

"Uh-huh. Said you and exactly zero other people."

"That's not true. He wouldn't be a multimillionaire if people didn't think he was funny."

"I'll give him funny. What I won't give him is leading man." She rolled her eyes.

"Oliver, you think guys need to be hot to get women? That's not what us women want. We want a good guy. We want a funny guy. We want a loyal guy. We want a guy we can count on, not an asshole."

"I'm taking it that I am the asshole?" I said, smiling smugly at her. "Or should I say, I'm the handsome hunk?"

"You're so full of yourself. This is what I mean." She rolled her eyes and looked me up and down. I stifled a chuckle. I didn’t want to get her even more riled up. Though that wasn’t exactly true. I’d love to see her more riled up.

"What can I say, Rosalie? It's been a while since you've seen me. And it's been a while since I've seen you. So maybe I'm just..." I shrugged. "Not used to being around you."

"Or maybe you've changed, and you're just a dickhead."

"But you thought I was a dickhead anyway, right? So..."

"Yeah, I thought you were a dickhead for reasons that weren't correct. I thought you were a dickhead because I thought you were saying rude things about me, but you were only saying that because you didn't want Foster to know that you were into me."

"Well, I didn't even say all of that," I say to her.

"Oh, so which part of it was wrong?"

"I mean, I don't want to say I was into you."

"So you weren't into me. You were just making out with me and touching me for fun?"

"I mean, obviously, it was more than that, but..." I sighed. I didn't want to acknowledge the depth of my feelings for her because I didn't know that they could go anywhere. I didn't know that we would ever be able to really be together successfully. Rosalie was beautiful and feisty and fun, but I wasn't sure that our personalities were compatible. I wasn't sure she'd forgive me for not telling her about Diana. I wasn't sure that an actual relationship between the two of us would work. And if it wouldn't work, then there was no point risking the friendship with her or her brother. So as far as she was concerned, I was just going to pretend that it had just been a one-time innocent dalliance.

I wasn't going to tell her that I'd spent months thinking about asking her on a date and trying to muster up the courage to speak to Foster. I wasn't going to tell her that her smile made my heart race and that her eyes did things to me that no other woman had before. I wasn't going to tell her that her voice was like a symphony I never wanted to end. No, none of those things mattered because I didn't see us going anywhere. They didn't seem to be something solid we could build upon. Rosalie was mad at me, and she was immature. I wasn't sure she was ready for a relationship, not a real serious one. And why should she be? She just graduated from college. She didn't even know what she wanted to do for a living. And yes, I could tell she was attracted to me. Yes, I could tell she wanted to be with me sexually, but I didn't want to hurt her.

I didn't want us to just have a sexual relationship. And then everything went crazy, and she stopped talking to me because I knew that if something like that happened, I would lose Foster as well. No way could he and I stay friends if I broke his sister's heart. And even worse than that, if she broke mine, I wouldn't be able to see him again because I knew the pain would be too strong.

"Oliver, so are we going or not?" Rosalie poked me in the chest.

"I mean, if you really want to go to an expensive restaurant, we can." I gave her a small smile. "But if you really would prefer to hang out with Chad, I can go get him and—”

"What?" She looked confused. "You're the one who just sent him away."

"I know. But after thinking about it, that wasn't right of me. If you and he have a connection and—”

"Oh my gosh, Oliver, you're going to give me whiplash." She sighed. "Do you want to take me to dinner or not?"

"I do," I said with a small smile.

"Then come on, let's go."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, I'm hungry."

"But what about Chad?"
