“What does this have to do with Grant?” I asked.

“It's your heart,” she began. I rolled my eyes. “My point is you like being in control, and falling in love is something you can't really control.”

“I don't—”

I started to argue, but my sister’s brows hitched up, her lips kicking up at one corner in a knowing smile. “Don't you? We all do to an extent. I'm just saying the need for control runs strong with you.”

I snorted. “I suppose.”

“Get your ass on that plane and go back early. You're freaking out because he got attacked by a bear, which sounds like a joke.”

“There are bears in Texas too,” I pointed out.

“I know, but we don’t have those big-ass ones in Texas,” she returned.

“I'll text Diego. He can pick you up at the airport,” she offered.

“No need. My car’s there, so I'll drive myself back. Plus, don't tell Diego.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to surprise Grant. If Diego knows, he'll tell somebody, and keeping it a secret will be impossible.”

“Okay. Just for practice, tell me how you feel about Grant.” My sister's gaze was soft with understanding.

With emotion rushing through me, I took a deep breath. “I love him.”

“You said it!” she whisper-shouted.

“Oh my God,” I murmured.

“When it really matters, it's not that easy to say.”

ChapterThirty-Two

HARLEY

Even though I moved my flight up, I still had to wait another day. I was impatient every minute. I texted Daphne repeatedly, checking to see if anything had changed with Grant. She assured me she had spoken to him more than once and that he was okay. I didn't even tell her I was coming back early. I'd booked the first leg of my flight as a red-eye during the night so I could sleep. Except I couldneversleep on a plane. I envied the people who could.

By the time Anchorage came into view late the following afternoon, I was cranky and tired as our plane descended to land. The view was breathtaking, with the afternoon sun bathing the mountains in shades of gold and silver.

I was nervous just getting here. It would be hours yet until I could see Grant because now I had a drive ahead of me. While my car was at the airport, I was now doubting the wisdom of my plan because I was exhausted. But I was also stubborn, and I wasn't going to delay. I hopped in my car and started driving. The last thing I remembered was the crunch of metal and a jarring impact.

My eyes flew open, and the sound of my scream ricocheted around me.

GRANT

Flynn grinned as he approached me inside the plane hangar. As soon as he stopped in front of me, he pulled me into a back-slapping hug. Stepping back, he offered, “You look okay. You must have showered this morning.”

I chuckled. “I did. I was staying at Nana's place. She has plenty of hot water.”

Whenever we booked these longer trips, we often flew into less developed areas. As a result, hot showers and good food weren't always an option. I didn't mind that, but it was nice to end in a place where I could enjoy the amenities.

“How’re you doing? How's your leg?” he asked, glancing down. “Can't see a thing, man.”

I chuckled. “There’s a tidy row of stitches on my thigh. Not too bad, but it hurts like hell,” I said honestly.
