Dugald’s face is hidden in shadow. He doesn’t speak but I feel his stare and see the glint of his eyes in the shadows.

“Well? Answer me.”

“Hello, Quinn.”

“Did. He. Live?” I bite off each word, ignoring his attempt at pleasantries.

He doesn’t respond. He doesn’t even blink.

Angry energy thrums, making me feel as if I’m vibrating. I have to know. “Well?”

He looks away then steps backwards into the deeper shadows.

“Be careful what you wish for, Quinn.”

“What does that mean? Answer the question.”

He shakes his head. “I cannot.”

“Cannot or will not?”

He shakes his head. “I wanted to see if you are okay.”

“If I’m okay?” I ball my hands into fists, shaking. “Do I look okay? I can’t focus. I can’t quit thinking about it. None of it mattered if I didn’t change anything!”

“You’re wrong,” he whispers. “You changed everything.”

“I have to go back.”

“I’ll see you soon, Destroyer.”

He steps back again and he’s gone, swallowed by the shadows.

“Dugald?” I ask, stepping into the shadow after him but they’re empty. Nothing.

I walk around the statue looking for him, but he’s gone like a puff of smoke in a breeze. Giving up finding him, I look up at the silvery moon which resembles a half-closed eye lazily gazing with no real interest.

A chilly breeze whistles around the concrete statue causing me to shiver. I rub my arms and close my eyes.

It was real. I’m not crazy.

“I will find a way back. I will find Duncan. If I can go back in time once, I can do it again.”

A vaguely defined thrumming echoes through my core. It reminds me of the power I gathered in the fae lands, power I haven’t felt since. As the thrumming grows stronger, the shadows cast by the moonlight sharpen, taking on more defined lines and shapes, and I feel it. That same malevolent awareness in the darkness. An intention that can only come with consciousness.

My nails dig into my palms and the pain sharpens my focus. I turn my back on the pensive shadows and stride back into my dormitory. Before I walk back into the building, I stop and turn to confront the darkness.

“I’m coming, Duncan. No matter what it takes. I’ll get back to you. I swear it.”
