He appears to think back to their conversation. “Our blood will bind us, but it will take the trinity for our blood to unite.”

“And that means...” I question, but Julian looks just as perplexed.

“Shante has never been concise with her fortunes. They’re like riddles, confusing as hell. We have some digging to do to figure out what the trinity is and how our blood will bind us. But there’s one more thing you need to know, Marina.”

I don’t like the way he’s looking everywhere but at me in this moment. What else could she have said to have him so clearly nervous? I don’t say a word, allowing him to take the lead.

“When I went to your parents’ house to get them to rehab, there were traces of black magic present. Someone—likely a dark witch who’s working with vampires—cast a spell. I believe it’s what caused your parents’ addictions.”

I gasp, bringing my hands to my mouth. Tears begin to spill at the idea that all these years, I’d resented them both for choosing alcohol and drugs over me, when it may have been magic all along.

“Are you sure, Julian?”

He nods. “Shante confirmed it. I’ll find out who did this, Marina. You have my word.”

“If your brother had anything to do with this, I’ll kill him myself,” I threaten.

“We’ll take care of him together. I promise you that, Marina.”

I pull him into me, hugging him tight. “Thank you, Julian.”

We sit in the quiet for some time contemplating our own worries. I think about my parents, somewhere south of here, hopefully fully recovering.

“Julian. If they’ve been spelled with black magic, do you think rehab will even work?”

“Shante and two others from her coven cleansed your parents. They’re safe now.”

I sigh in relief, hopeful that now they have a shot at life.

I lean over, placing a kiss to his lips, deepening it when his hands go under my shirt, running up my back.

“What now?” I breathe into his mouth.

“Tonight, I just want to be with you,” he says, lifting my shirt over my head and placing a kiss at the base of my neck. I shiver under his touch, wanting nothing more than to forget the world and enjoy this night with the man I crave. “No more talk about the Council or death. You and me, Marina. Let me love you.”

I twist my hands behind my back, unhooking the black bra—that never made it off last time—and allow it to slip from my arms, baring me to him. The way his hungry eyes roam my naked chest has me eager for everything he’s offering.

“Lie back,” he demands.

That’s a request I’m happy to indulge, but his phone ringing from the nightstand has us both pausing.

“Don’t answer it,” I whine.

When he stretches over to see who’s calling, Julian’s eyes widen. “I have to take this.”

Over the next few minutes Julian does a lot of mumbling agreements to requests I can’t hear. My anxiety begins to build as his eyes darken. “Make the arrangements.” With that he hangs up the phone and blows out a harsh breath.

“Get dressed, baby. We have to get back to the manor. The Council is on their way.”

And just like that, the contented bubble bursts.

Chapter Sixteen

We haven’t been back to Bellamy manor for more than ten minutes before Julian places a kiss to my head. “I’m sorry I have to rush off like this. I wasn’t expecting Dupré to make this meeting happen so quickly.”

“Don’t apologize. This is important. I’m just happy he made it happen. That sounds promising, right?”

“Let’s hope so,” he says, kissing me once more. “Go freshen up and I’ll come get you after I’ve met with the Council.” He grabs my shoulders, looking into my eyes. “Stay in your room, Marina. These vampires are ancient and one or more isn’t trustworthy. I don’t want them to stumble across you.”
