“The Fae child that Molly was switched with died immediately. What do you think that means?”

“I don’t know. Maybe they are holding her there because their child never lived?” I suggest, not having a better idea.

“But to what end? To be a slave?”

“Maybe? But how would she be able to communicate with you, Marina?”

She shakes her head, as baffled as I am. “I think that we need to consult with another witch. Someone who may actually know stuff about the Fae that we won’t find in books. Shante has already made it pretty clear she knows very little. I didn’t get much more about the Fae than what we’ve read in these books from her.” She stops talking, seeming to ponder another solution. “What about Lucresse?”

I stiffen and Marina notices.

“What am I missing?”

I want to tell her. Keeping secrets is killing me. But the last thing I want is anyone poking around Reese and uncovering Law’s secret. I won’t lie to Marina about anything, but I won’t tell her what I learned about Reese. Not until Law comes clean with Julian, or I can determine that Reese is trustworthy.

“Nothing. I’m sure she’s busy, but maybe Addy can arrange something.” Marina smiles wide. “Thank you, Marina. For your help today,” I say, smiling.

She grabs my hand and squeezes. “We’re going to find her. We have some things that need to be settled around here, but as soon as I know Shannon is in good hands and the Council’s new agenda begins and is operating smoothly, this is our priority. We do this together.”

I nod. “Together.”

She pulls away, sitting back in her chair. “I need to tell you what Shante said during our reading.”

I raise a brow but remain quiet, eager to hear what the witch had to say.

“She said she saw three girls surrounding me.”

“Who?” I pull a face, confused.

She shrugs. “I’m not sure. She said I wasn’t in the vision. It was my aura that the three girls surround.”

“Bizarre.” I shake my head. “These witches and their riddles.”

Marina snorts. “You’ve caught on to that already?”

“Reese wasn’t exactly thorough in her directions.”

She laughs, but it fades quickly. “There’s... something more. Something—”

Her words trail off and I sit up straight, growing nervous.

“What is it? Just tell me, Rina.”

She takes a big breath and blows it out. “I’m not human,” she whispers. “I’m Julian’s familiar as you are Law’s, but our shared powers won’t disappear when we don’t share blood. It’s an eternal bond.”

“Eternal?” I mull over that word as icy tendrils crawl up my arms and over my shoulders. “As in... you’re immortal?”

“My life is tethered to Julian’s. If either of us dies—which supposedly would be very unlikely to happen—the other dies too.”

“I’m confused,” I admit. “Are you or aren’t you immortal?”

“I am. For the most part.”

My heart thunders in my chest as tears pool in my eyes. My chest tightens and I hunch over the table, trying to hold in the sob that threatens to burst from me.

I should be grateful that my sister is nearly impossible to kill, but with that comes the knowledge that we won’t grow old together. While I grey and wrinkle, she’ll remain youthful and young. I’ll die and she won’t.

“I should be the one sobbing,” Marina coos into my head. “It’ll be me who’s left to hold myself together when you leave me.”
