“He killed my friend Stacey,” she bites out, getting into the subject faster than I thought.

“That I did hear about.” I blow out a harsh breath. “The next three days after, I refused to eat or be anywhere around him. Not because I knew Stacey, but because I was afraid he’d eventually snap on me.”

Lies for the benefit of his charade.

One day, he’s going to owe me. Big time.

“He actually told you about what happened with Stacey?”

He was trying to keep the crown in the Bellamy line the only way he knew how.

What that means, he never exactly expanded upon. I know that there is more to the story, but he was unable to spill all of it due to his agreement with the witch.

But I saw his remorse. He regretted what he did to that girl.

It doesn’t make it right, and certainly Marina will never forgive him for it, but irredeemable men don’t feel remorse that deep. It’s not something I can say to Marina because she won’t want to hear it and she’ll never understand. Right now isn’t the time to convince her. Not when I just got her back.

“I’m not saying he’s a good man, Marina. I’m just saying he was good to me. That’s all. Why he did what he did, I’m not sure we’ll ever know. He’s battling demons that I certainly don’t understand.” I stare into her eyes, hoping if she hears anything, it’s what I say next. “He’s troubled, Marina, but I can tell he wants help. He just doesn’t know how to ask for it.”

Her hard stare slowly melts away, and I think I catch a glimpse of something other than hatred. Maybe there is hope that one day, she’d be open to hearing Marcellus’s side.

But not today.

For now, I’m good with that. I have questions of my own, and they all involve Julian Bellamy.

“So... care to tell me what’s up with you and the head vamp?”

And she does. Every last sinful detail.
