Katina gets very quiet for several moments and I wonder what she’s thinking. I don’t have to wait long to find out.

“It might not make sense to us, but some events must happen for other—bigger—things to unfold. Some call it fate. Others call it destiny.” She shrugs. “I have to believe this is all happening just as it’s supposed to, no matter how much we hatehowit’s happening.”

My eyes narrow in on her. “What do you mean?”

“Those girls were in a cycle of trying to save each other as opposed to working together to save them both. Maybe it took Maggie removing herself from Marina to start new patterns.”

“That... was very... insightful, Katina.”

“Well, don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation that doesn’t fit that mold. Sarcasm and pessimism are the traits I’d like others to believe I live by. Keeps things interesting.” She winks and I crack a smile. “If there’s anything else you need, please let me know.”

She turns to walk out, but I stop her.

“Katina...” She looks over her shoulder. “Could you... help me with something?”

“I’m here to serve.” She curtsies, wobbling on the way back up. For a moment, I’m afraid she might topple over, but she steadies herself and turns back toward me.

“I want to do something for her. Something...”

“Sweet?” Katina offers, and I nod. “Why?” she narrows her eyes, inspecting me a little too thoroughly for my liking.

“To atone.” I shrug. “To do something nice for my friend.”

Her lips purse as she bites her cheek. “And that’s all? Friends?”

“Of course,” I hiss. “Maggie is a child. I’m the only friend she has outside of Marina.”

“Mmm,” Katina says, not sounding convinced.

Well, screw that. “She’s a friend, Katina. One I care enough about to never go there.” I don’t need to elaborate wherethereis.

She nods. “What do you have in mind?”

It shouldn’t bother me that Katina seems satisfied and willing to help on the condition that I don’t plan to pursue anything with Maggie, but it does. Although I mean it when I say that will never happen, I wonder which part of my past makes me unworthy in Katina’s eyes.

“Law,” she calls, drawing my attention back to her, “what can I do?”

“She mentioned on the ride over here that she wanted pizza.” I bite my lower lip. “I’m sure she’s tired after everything, so maybe something the girls can do together in their rooms? Shit, I don’t know. What do I know about human girls?”

My mind is jumbled. I can’t even form one coherent idea.

“I’d think with your extensive knowledge of girls in general, this wouldn’t be so hard.”

“Katina,” I warn, and she puts her hands up in surrender.

“Okay, fine. I’ll round up some things for you. Julian’s on his way back here. I’d suggest you make a call to him to grab pizza from town.”

I nod. “Thanks, Katina. For everything.”

“It’ll be all right, Law. Just continue to fight for them. Those girls need as many people in their corner as possible.”

We share a small smile before she leaves me.

I pull out my phone and dial Julian’s number.

“Is everything okay?” Julian’s voice has an edge. No doubt he’s anxious to get back here to Marina, knowing what tornado of information is currently being thrown her way.

“Fine. The girls are together. Maggie... well... she asked for pizza.”
