Didn’t mean to go there. It would’ve been better to tell Marina about the kiss. It’s evident by the scrunched nose and overall look of disgust she’s currently sporting.

“Blood? That’s your substitution for kissing?”

“It was the single most erotic night of my life,” I say a little too defensively.

Until I kissed him, and he had a change of feelings. It all came crashing down after that.

I cover my eyes with my hands, embarrassed still to this day by the events of that night.

“He drank from me and then acted like it never happened.”

“I won’t hurt you, okay?” He squeezes my hand in reassurance. “We do this once... just to see if there’s anything to these legends.”

I nod.

“Maggie, I need you to use your words. Tell me you understand.” His eyes bore into mine and I shift under the intensity of that stare.

“I understand, Law. I’m not scared.”

That’s not exactly true. I’m petrified. I never believed in legends before meeting Law, but I know for certain that the connection between us isn’t of this world.

With a simple touch, my body lights up from within. Every molecule hums when he’s near and practically cries in his absence. I’m terrified, not about what’s about to happen, but about what it’ll mean when we know once and for all that we’re magically connected. Because I know we are. I don’t need an experiment to prove it.

“What happens after?”

His brows crease. “After? I take the evidence that the legends are wrong—or at least where you’re concerned—to the Council and have them call off the dogs. Your family will be safe.”

“What if the legends are true?”

He shakes his head back and forth. “They’re not. They’re wrong.”

I prickle at his rebuff, pulling my hand from his grip and standing tall. “You don’t know that. I could be one of the triplets from the legend.”

“Why are you angry?” He looks perplexed, his nose scrunched and lips pressed tightly together.

“I’m not angry. I just don’t get why you’re so against the thought of me being connected to you. What’s wrong with me?”

He sighs. “Maggie, look at me,” he commands, grabbing my elbow and gently turning me back toward him.

My head lifts and our eyes meet. “I don’t want you tied to this world. Being part of the legend would put you in more danger than you’ve ever been. It’s not a life I want for you. Can’t you see that?”

I understand where he’s coming from and I appreciate his concern for me, but I’m never escaping the Council.

“I’ve never known a life in which I wasn’t in danger, Law. At least this would give me a fighting chance. You’ve said it yourself; vampires don’t leave humans that know about their world to live. At least not vampires tied to the Council. Being the legend could make me stronger. It could give me the ability to fight when they come for me. I don’t want this... I need it.”

He doesn’t say a word as he steps in to me, turning my body around so that my back is against his chest. He trails a finger up the curve of my neck as his lips graze the shell of my ear. “Are you sure?”

The words are caught in my throat, but I nod my consent.

“Close your eyes and breathe. This will sting at first.”

I do as instructed, closing my eyes, waiting for that promised burn.

And oh, God does it burn.

Fire lashes its way down my spine, webbing out and spreading up my arms and down my legs. The tiny hairs all over my body stand, electrified. The burn doesn’t last long, as it’s chased away by tingling aftershocks. The feeling is akin to dozens of hands gliding over my skin, tickling and soothing. Law’s tongue moves over the bite and I liquify. Moisture pools in places it has no business doing so, but I’m not mortified, like I should be. Law’s growl confirms he may be clued in to how turned on I am... and he’s in no better shape. This emboldens me to arch my back into him. To crane my neck, opening myself for more.

Take what you want, Law. It’s yours.
