“Which are?” she waggles her brows and I shoot her a look. “Fine. Sorry.”

“Okay, so back to the auction,” I say, trying to get us back to safer topics.

“Um... no.” She shakes her head. “You and I were just discussing your tiff with Law.”

“Ugh, it was nothing!” I bellow. “I’m just being sensitive because once again, we had an intimate moment, I let him drink from me, and then he ran off.”

“Wait... what?” She turns toward me, eyes wide and full of something like jealousy. “You already got him to bite you? What the hell!”

My head falls back with something between a groan and a moan. “He’s so damn infuriating.”

She grins, squirming around a little too giddily for my liking. It’s an indicator that she’s about to pry until I unload all my problems onto her. “Tell me all the super private, overly personal details.”

Knew that was coming.

“We made out. He bit me when I asked. Then he read my mind and didn’t like what he heard. He ran... it was a fucking asshole move.”

Her eyes widen animatedly. “Oooh, you are mad. What did he hear?”

I huff. “That I’d done what Reese asked.”

She squints. “Why would that make him run? I was thinking you let the L word slip or something else entirely too major for Law’s pea brain to handle.”

“It was less about what he heard and more about his insecurities.”

“About what?”

I pull the blanket up, hugging it to my chest. “I’m not really sure. I can sense his emotions, but I don’t always know what exactly I’m feeling. Does that make sense?”

“No,” she says, shaking her head. “What do you mean you can sense his emotions?”

Pulling my bottom lip between my teeth, I try to formulate words to describe the sensation. “Since they found me at Marcellus’s, I have been attuned to Law in ways I haven’t been before. I couldn’t hear his thoughts anymore since we hadn’t shared blood recently, but I could sense when he was angry.” I suck on my teeth, thinking about how his anger made me feel. “It’s easy to tell when he’s angry by his facial expressions, but even when I wasn’t looking at him, I could feel his rage sweep through me, hot and heavy.”

“Are you sure that wasn’t your insane need for his d—” I glare at my sister, and she stops that train of thought. “What? I’m not wrong.” She rolls her eyes. “Proceed.”

I take a deep breath and continue. “When he’s sad, coldness seeps in. When he’s happy, butterflies tickle my stomach.” My head lowers. “I’m still trying to decipher what all the sensations mean. I’ve managed to figure these out by paying attention to his facial expressions. Things that give his mood away.”

“That’s... strange. I mean, I don’t feel that with Julian. Shouldn’t I?”

It is strange that I’m experiencing this when she isn’t. Wouldn’t that be a side effect of the bond? Wouldn’t she have that same ability?

I huff. “It’s hard to tell. There’s still so much we don’t know about this legend and the bond.”

She nods and we both stay silent for several minutes. I’m enjoying the peace, but it’s hard to tell what’s going on in her head.

“Law’s been different since you came back.”

My head turns to look at her. “Different how?”

She gnashes her teeth together. “Stiff. Not as easygoing or funny.”

“Gee... thanks,” I quip, not loving the insinuation that my return has made him boring.

“I’m not blaming you, Mags. He’s obviously working through some inner turmoil, and if I had to guess, I’d say it’s him trying to work out his feelings for you. It’s a struggle for Law to be serious. Hysterical? Life of the party? He’s got both of those on lock, but boyfriend... that’s an adjustment.”

“I’m not asking him for a commitment. I’d settle for a simple declaration of feelings.”

She chuckles. “The holy grail as far as Law’s concerned.”
