He chuckles. “Fair enough.”

“Oh, and her grandfather is a senator.” I’m pretty sure that’s where most of their money comes from.

Kade turns back to me. “That’s interesting.”

“Sure, if you think politics is interesting.”

“Don’t you?” He tilts his head. “At least the kind on television, right?” His voice takes on a teasing lilt, and I scrunch up my nose. I’d told Gabriel about my love ofScandal, but evidently, Kade had overheard. That, or it was already something the lot of them knew about me, anyway.

“You’re making fun of me.”

The corner of his mouth kicks up. “Maybe a little.”

“Don’t knock it until you try it,” I tell him.

He holds his hands up. “All right, all right. Maybe I’ll give it a shot.” He moves closer again. “Are you ready to go?”

I only nod, because I don’t trust my voice not to crack. I don’t want to leave, not again. Especially when I won’t be back here again. The weight of that crashes down on me and panic surfaces in a rush, making my chest tight. I spin away and hurry out of the room, sucking in air and forcing it into my lungs as I try to focus on something, anythingelse.

Kade appears in front of me, and I jump back, gasping in surprise.

“Fucking vampire mojo,” I grumble, still catching my breath as I meet his gaze.

“Look at me,” he orders in that voice that latches on to the deepest parts of me and forces compliance. “You’re okay. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. The tightness in your chest will ease in a minute. Just keep breathing for me, okay?” He poses it as a question, though his glamour is making me do exactly as he says.

After a few deep breaths in and out, I’m feeling much better. My head is clear, and I don’t feel the immediate need to run away from everything.

Kade steps in and holds my chin between his thumb and forefinger. “You are the most beautiful human I’ve laid eyes on, you know that?”

I lick my lips without thinking about it. “You don’t have to keep trying to distract me,” I murmur. “I’m fine.”

He leans in until his lips are mere inches from mine. “I’m not,” he says, his voice filled with sincerity. “I’m being selfish, actually.”

“How so?”

He slides his fingers along my jaw to cup the side of my neck and tips my head back with his thumb under my chin so I’m looking into his eyes again. “Because all I’ve been thinking about since that boring as fuck lecture was how badly I want to devour you again.”

My eyes widen slightly. Perhaps I should be used to his forwardness by now, but he still manages to catch me off guard when he says things like that. Things that make my heart race and my core clench with need.

He presses his lips against my temple and sighs. “Tell me no.” His words make me shiver as he rests his other hand against my hip.

“Will you stop if I do?” I whisper, and the throbbing between my legs really hopes he doesn’t.

There’s a stretch of silence.

“No.” His lips crash down on mine, and he grips my hips, hauling me against him. I close my eyes as he devours my mouth, and wrap my arms around his neck, clinging to him so tightly he can probably feel my heart pounding against my chest.

Kade kisses me until my head spins, until I’m breaking away to fill my lungs with air.

“We should go,” I manage in between breaths, and put some distance between us. “I was supposed to go back to the house right after class, remember?”

He rolls his eyes, grinning. “And you are. We just took a little detour.” He picks up the bag I dropped on the floor at some point—I hadn’t even realized—and shoulders it.

We walk out of my apartment, and the sound of the door closing echoes down the hallway.

Back at the house, Lex and Gabriel are gone. I take my bag to my room and stop in the bathroom to freshen up before wandering around a bit. I’ve got some time to kill before dinner, and while I probably should review the online notes from today’s lecture, it’s the farthest thing from my mind.
