The room has stopped spinning, but I don’t move away. Being close to him like this makes me feel… powerful. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s his blood running through my veins, but I feel connected to him in a way that I haven’t been with the others.

“Tell me,” I blurt.

His dark brows knit as he peers down at me. “Tell you what?”

I lick the dryness from my lips, then press them together for a moment before saying, “What you’re going to do with me.”

He exhales a deep breath, stirring the hair at my temple. “Calla…” There’s a warning in his voice.

“Please.” I put as much force into that one word as I can. “Atlas, I can’t stand living with not knowing. If you’re going to kill me, just please—”

He cups my cheeks, tilting my head back so I’m looking into his eyes. “Slow down. Breathe. No one is going to hurt you. Killing you would be pointless. A waste of an asset.”

My stomach sinks. Maybe I should be relieved by that, but there’s a part of me that is hurt by his words. Not to mention being wildly confused by them, considering I have no idea what I could possibly do for them that would make me an asset, especially when they won’t tell me a fucking thing. Living in the dark is chipping away at my sanity.

I huff out a sigh. “What would you do in my position? Would you just accept being kept in the dark and given scraps of pretty useless information every now and then?” When he opens his mouth to respond, I keep talking. “I mean, what’s the point, Atlas? Really? Be honest with me, please. If I’m just a human plaything for the lot of you, at least let me know. I’m grateful you’ve had the decency to let me continue my studies—mostly because it gives me something to do that isn’t sitting around here wondering what’s going to happen tomorrow, but—”

My words are cut off when the sound of shouting from inside the house reaches us. Atlas’s brows furrow and his jaw tightens, making my stomach churn nervously.

The shouting gets louder. There are at least three different voices, all sharp and filled with venom, but I can’t hear exact words, just noise.

I frown at Atlas. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing you need to worry about,” he says without looking my way.

Frustration overpowers my nerves, and I take a couple of steps toward the door to the garage that will take me into the house. “Fine, then I guess I’ll go see for myself.”

His eyes flash with anger, and he moves in a blur of darkness, appearing in front of me in the space of a heartbeat. “The hell you will.” He’s a solid wall of muscle and supernatural strength, but I refuse to back down.

“Move,” I snap at him.

He merely arches a brow.

I scowl. “Atlas,move.”

“Make me,” he taunts, knowing full well that isn’t possible. Bastard.

My eyes narrow sharply as the shouting inside continues, and I cross my arms. “I’m fucking sick of the secrets.”

“I don’t give a shit, Calla. You’re not going in there.”

“You can’t just—”

A door slams, making the house shake from the force, and I jump, my heart leaping into my throat. The shouting has stopped and the house is eerily silent.

“Fine,” he says, “go ahead.”

I glare at him and storm away, jogging down the stairs and through the garage into the house. By the time I close the door behind me, it’s only Lex and Gabriel in the living room, talking in hushed voices. They glance over at me when I walk in, and Gabriel smiles warmly, as if whatever just had them shouting didn’t happen.

“Will someone please explain what just happened? Because—”

The garage door opens, and Atlas struts in, his expression dark as he looks between the others. He heard the conversation that happened before I came in.

“Because he won’t tell me a damn thing,” I finish, jerking my thumb back at Atlas.

Lex smirks. “Nothing we can’t handle, which means you don’t need to worry about it.”

Pressure builds in my chest, and I clench my jaw hard. The desire to scream rips through me, and Gabriel must see that on my face because he catches my attention and nods, offering me a look that says,I understand your frustration. His gaze drops to my hands, and he frowns. “You were bleeding.”
