Calla bites the inside of her cheek, then nods. “Fine.”

“I don’t suppose you’d agree to stay with Marcel while we—”

“Nope,” she interjects in a firm voice, her eyes daring me to challenge her.

My lips twitch briefly. “Of course not.”

I could easily make her stay behind, but we’ve come to a place where that no longer feels like the right move. As much as I want to protect her from our world, she’s a part of it now. She’s not helpless—far from it—and we’ll have her back regardless. Calla is family, and more importantly, shechoseus.

Fighting with Atlas leaves me feeling all kinds of conflicted. My skin is warm, and I’m vibrating with unbridled energy.

My stomach is also growling non-stop.

We left my parent’s place before breakfast this morning, and I hadn’t been hungry then, anyway. Turns out, fighting a vampire is quite the workout.

Atlas glances over at me from the driver’s seat and then turns on the signal to get off the interstate. A few minutes later, we’re in a drive-thru lane ordering food.

My phone chimes while we’re waiting in line, and I grab it from the cup holder.

Hey! How’s it going? I’ve been thinking about you. Hope you’re well!

I smile at the screen, and Kade tugs on the back of my hair from the seat behind me. “Quit it,” I grumble, batting his hand away.

“What are you smiling about?” Lex asks.

“You guys are so nosy,” I say. “It’s Tessa.”

Lex shakes his head. “Who?”

“The witchy girl,” Kade tells him.

“Oh. Right. Since when are you two besties?”

Since you won’t let me talk to my actual best friend, I want to say. Instead, I shrug. “We’ve kept in touch a bit since the whole blood spell thing.”

We move up slightly in line, and I scan the menu. Everything sounds good, but I’m pretty close to starving at this point, so that is likely a contributing factor.

“Huh. What does she want?”

I roll my eyes. “She’s just checking in. You know, being nice? People do that sometimes.”

Lex whistles. “Someone is hangry.”

At the window, Atlas orders coffee for everyone and breakfast sandwiches for the rest of us.

“You’re not hungry?” I ask automatically.

“That very much depends on if you’re offering to feed me,” he answers in a serious tone, without looking at me. He’s sliding his credit card out of his wallet as we inch toward the window.

“If that’s on the menu, I want to change my order,” Kade says close to my ear, and I shift away, pressing closer to the passenger side door.

“Nope,” I shoot back. “You’ll have to pick up some blood bags and behave like civilized vampires. Sorry.”

Lex snorts. “You’re no fun.”
