The sensations from drinking Lex’s blood while Kade takes mine is incredible. It's overwhelming and leaves me dizzy with bloodlust and pleasure like I've never felt before, and if I wasn't already lying down, I’m sure I would’ve collapsed at this moment.

Kade pulls back, licking his lips at the same time I do, and he smirks at me as Lex sighs with pleasure.

“Well,” I say in a quiet voice, “that was unexpected.”

“Hmm,” Kade agrees, “though the best things usually are.”

After we get cleaned up and dressed, I slip downstairs to the kitchen to find something to eat. My stomach's grumbling but my gums hurt so bad I can barely think of anything besides the blood bags in the fridge.

Drinking from Lex was hot as fuck, but it did nothing to sate the cravings of human blood I now have to live with.

I pour the contents of one blood bag into a mug and stick it in the microwave before grabbing things to prepare a chopped salad. I'm sure if I asked Gabriel, he'd be more than happy to make me something fancier, but I like knowing that I can still do these things on my own.

I'm sipping on the blood as I slice some grilled chicken when Atlas walks into the room, the stoic expression I've come to naturally associate with him on his face.

“What's going on?” I ask him, trying to keep my tone casual and light.

He leans against the counter opposite me, crossing his arms over his chest, watching me work for a few moments before lifting his gaze to mine. “What we talked about last night…” He starts and immediately has my full attention. “I’m willing to forge a different path than the one Simon and Lenora have pushed me down my entire life. We're going to try to work with the hunters in an attempt to build a bridge of peace between us, but I'm going to need your help.”

I drop the knife onto the cutting board and stare at him, my eyes widening.I can't believe he just said that.I move at vamp speed, throwing my arms around him in a tight hug.

His pulse pounds in his throat, and I can hear the way it quickens as his heart beats faster. A giggle slips through my lips, and he responds by holding me tighter, tipping my chin up and sealing his mouth over mine in a fiery kiss. Our tongues dance, but this time, it's not a battle for control. It's slow, explorative, and nice. Something I certainly wasn't expecting from him.

Hooting sounds behind us, and I immediately recognize Lex's voice as I pull away from Atlas, my cheeks burning as if he caught us doing something we shouldn’t be.

After I finish lunch—and Lex eats half of my salad—the five of us sit around the coffee table in the living room with Fallon and Jace on the phone.

Gabriel filled them in on what we're going to attempt, and while they're in New York City, they wanted to be a part of the conversation and have offered to come to whatever meeting as backup for us.

I sit on the couch, my knee bouncing as I try to focus on what's being said. And as much as I want to be part of the discussions, I can't help feeling overwhelmed by the whole situation. It feels as if someone is sitting on my chest. Pulling in a breath is becoming more and more difficult.

I need air.

I get up and leave the living room, stepping outside to the patio in the backyard. Pulling my phone out of the pocket of my hoodie, I type a quick text to Tessa, and her response is almost immediate.

Hey! Good to hear from you. How are you adjusting to life as a vampire?

I groan, shaking my head, and type back,I reached out to distract myself from that, so I want to hear about YOUR life.

Instead of responding by text, Tessa calls me.

I answer, laughing softly. “Hey.”

“We need to get together and drink until our problems are funny.”

“Deal,” I say immediately. “Where should I meet you?”

Tessa sighs. “I wish I could get on a plane right now and come hang with you. I'd even deal with the guys just to be able to spend some time with you and be away from this place for a minute.”

My lips turn down. “I wish you were here. Things here are getting more complicated by the day.”

“What do you mean?”

“For starters, Lex and I went to a club the other night, and it got raided by hunters.”

She sucks in a breath. “Holy shit. Are you okay?”

“We're totally fine. I mean, Atlas had a hissy fit, but what else is new? It just doesn't bode well when we're trying to figure out if there's a possibility that we could broker peace with them.”
