Chapter 7

Willow

It's been a few days since my hook up with Ares, and I can't get it off my mind. In part because I had sex with him and two because it may have been the best of my life. Lines could get blurred pretty damn quickly, so I need to avoid him at all costs.

The school day ended about 45 minutes ago, and I'm just gathering my things so I can do some work at home when Charlie Holt comes into my classroom, tears streaming down his face.

"What's wrong, Charlie?" I ask soothingly. I teach 1st graders, and tears are not an unexpected sight on most days, between the teasing and other little tantrums.

"My uncle forgot me," he whines.

"Oh, you were expecting a ride from your uncle?" I ask.

"He's supposed to take me to the arcade today," Charlie confirms.

I take Charlie's small hand and lead him to the office. When we arrive, Mrs. Johnson is already got her bag over her shoulder.

"I need to get an emergency contact number for Charlie," I say.

"Oh dear, I'm already late for my doctor's appointment, and everyone else just left.

The truth is I'm surprised the teachers on pick-up duty didn't notice Charlie waiting though maybe he was not in the front of the building.

"No problem, I can sort this out. You go ahead," I smile.

"Thanks, dear."

Turning to Charlie, I say, "why don't you go over to the table and get your homework out."

Mrs. Johnson's work station is arranged at the reception counter just as you walk through the two double doors into the office suite. When I touch her mouse, her screen lights up, and I enter my login details. As I scan her desktop, I hear the double doors open. When I look up, I see the face of someone I used to know well.

"Well, I'll be damned," the gravelly voice announces Gavin Holt.

Holy hell, I've not seen Gavin since I left Juniper for college. We dated my last two years of high school, and he didn't take me going well. He's smiling widely, and he still has the devilish dimple that always melted my heart just a little. He's gotten ripped since I last saw him, and I'm surprised to see his t-shirt is under a cut. Shit, is he a Grim Saint too? I don't have time to process this because Charlie gets up from the chair and rushes up to Gavin.

"Hey, little man," Gavin looks down at him with affection, and they tap fists.

"You forgot me!" Charlie isn't letting Gavin off the hook that easily.

"Yeah, sorry Charlie, I had business run late," Gavin looks apologetically down at Charlie's crestfallen face. I can see the resemblance now that they're standing so close together.

"Wow," I break my silence, "this is Tracy's baby?" my hand goes to my heart.

Tracy is a few years older and had gotten married when she went to California after graduation.

I'd heard she'd had a baby, but it never occurred to me Charlie was related to Gavin.

"Yeah," Gavin moves closer to the reception desk, and I see his eyes roam down my body before continuing, "they moved back about two years ago."

"I didn't realize," I say in response. I can't help but notice how the muscles in Gavin's arms bunch up as he leans over the counter. I don't know what to do with my hands, so I clasp them in front of me.

"You look great!" Gavin smirks.

"Thanks, so do you," I smile. Gavin always had the richest brown eyes, as if he was memorizing your soul.

"Can we go now?" Charlie is asking impatiently.

"In a minute, buddy, why don't you get your stuff together," Gavin gestures to Charlie's stuff spread out on the side table.
