Chapter 11

Willow

I'm feeling much better that evening, so when Zoe asks me to watch Cody, I don't mind. She wanted to fill in for a sick co-worker, and it wasn't like I had any plans tonight. I'm giving Cody his dinner when the doorbell rings. I smile at him in his highchair with pureed carrots all over his face. I frown as soon as I open the door and find Ares standing there. Why does he have to look so damn good all the time?

I put my hand on my hip and glared at him. Ares gives zero fucks because he side-steps me and goes right past me into the house. I spin around in a huff, anger starting to make my blood boil. Before I have a chance to yell at him, he's standing in front of Cody's highchair with his hands outstretched. Cody giggles and raises his little arms into the air. I wouldn't have believed it if it wasn't for the fact I was standing right there. Ares picks him up and takes him to the kitchen to clean off his hands and mouth. I'm mesmerized as he proceeds to the living room with Cody in his arms. Ares places Cody on the floor in front of his toys and then joins him on the carpet.

"You going to shut that door, vixen?" Ares asks with a chuckle in his voice.

I say nothing as I close the door and lock it. I move over to the living room and notice Ares is engaging with Cody by working the little switches on the toy that lights up.

"What are you doing here?" I finally ask.

"We need to talk!" Ares replies.

"And what do we need to talk about?" I do not like this one bit. Ares hot as sin walking into my house like he owns the place and playing with his half-brother as if they hang out on the regular. Having my heart melted was not on the agenda today.

"Your buddy, Holt set off a pipe bomb at my clubhouse today," Ares states in a flat tone.

"What?" I can't have heard right, and when I move to the other side of the room, Ares is looking at me with a scowl.

"You heard me," he says.

"Use your words, Ares! Tell me specifics, and how do you know it was Gavin?" I demand. I'm nervous this news could be accurate. I don’t feel what I used to for Gavin, but I still don’t want him to be the bad guy.

Cody looks back at me and points to his toy. I smile and sit on the floor with the two of them. How the hell is this even happening right now?

Ares goes into detail about the bomb going off and everyone finding the gate destroyed.

"So, do you guys have cameras?" I ask.

"We do, but you can't make out who the driver was, and there was no license plate on the old beat-up Buick that came by.

"I know you saw Gavin in town with me, but is that all your basing this on?" I want to know.

"Let's just say our organizations are not on the same page right now," Ares' eyes are shining bright with anger.

"Look, I don't know what Gavin is up to; why are you telling me this?" I'm starting to get annoyed.

Cody must feel the tension between us as he begins to cry. I get to my feet, realizing it wasn't my most graceful move ever, and bend to grab Cody, gently rocking him.

Ares stands as well and crosses his arms; there is a coldness in his eyes that I do not like at all.

"Do yourself a favor and stay away from Holt," Ares demands.

"Don't tell me who to see, Jamison Walker!" I bite back at him.

Ares moves closer to me, the look on his face menacing, and I genuinely believe if it weren't for Cody between us, he would have grabbed my arms to shake me. The look on his face is dangerous. I don't want to spend time with Gavin, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let the control freak here dictate my choices.

Ares stomps to the front door, and as he reaches for the knob, he calls over his shoulder, "this isn't the end of the discussion. I'm taking you to my house tomorrow; be ready at 7 o'clock," Ares instructs as he leaves.

"What the actual fuck?" I call out to the room after the door closes.
