“So, what’s your name?” His accent wasn’t local, but definitely southern, and I wondered where he was originally from.

“Ivy, is Taz your real name?” I asked, knowing it wasn’t.

“Not exactly, but I’d have to know you better to tell you all my secrets,” he laughed, and I smiled instinctively, knowing he was just a harmless flirt.

“What did you say before about vices?” I asked as we stood in front of a metal door that had a security panel. He waved the key card he had over it and the door made a beep. We entered a narrow hallway. Once the door was closed behind us, he stopped, looking at me.

“Have you ever been to the club before?” he asked.

“No, I’ve not been in New Orleans very long.”

“Ragnarök has many delights: dancers, cards, a playroom — you pick the poison and I bet we can deliver.” he brought my hand up and kissed my knuckles. I felt my cheeks heat.—

“So, why me?”

“Why you?” He quirked his brow.

“You had many people out there to choose from. I wasn’t even in line yet,” I said.

“Not as gorgeous as you,” he winked.

“I bet you tell that to all the girls,” I blushed, despite trying not to.

“Not even close. Come on, let’s get you a drink. I’ll set you up in the VIP section and you can watch the dancers until you're ready to decide what else to try,” he smirked, and guided me down the hallway with his hand at the small of my back. The gesture was light, as if he wanted to be sure I knew he wasn’t pushing me.

I heard the music before we got to the room.Sex and Candywas blaring through the speakers as the girl with pink hair grabbed the pole in the center of the stage and pulled herself up, flipping backward as she clung with her thigh muscles and one hand. As I looked away, I noticed Taz was taking me toward the back of the large room to a roped off area with plush sofas and tables. He leaned into my ear and asked what I wanted to drink. I said a vodka cranberry and watched the crowd. The girl on the stage had everyone mesmerized as she touched the floor, showcasing her perfect ass in the thong she wore. When she turned around, she’d taken off her bra to display her large rack. Rob asked me to go to a strip club once, and I didn’t mind, though some of my girlfriends thought I was nuts for indulging him. We had the best sex that night and I was always content knowing he came home to me. I felt nothing now when I thought of him. Losing Shannon had changed everything for me and I felt hollow except for my need to punish the asshole who sold her the heroin.

Taz returned and slid close, putting his arm across the back of the sofa. I could smell his aftershave, sandalwood maybe.

We sat in silence, sipping our drinks as another dancer came onstage, and the music changed toBlack Widowby Iggy Azalea.

Taz’s fingers started playing with a loose strand of my hair.

“I’m not taking you from work, am I?” I asked, leaning into him so he could hear me.

He smiled at me, “nah, I’m good, darlin’”

The way he said darlin’ put a flutter in my stomach. This guy was sexy as hell. I was about to ask him about the playroom and if maybe there was more on offer besides alcohol when I noticed another guy in a vest approaching us. He was an inch or two shorter than Taz and stockier, but also hot. What did you have to be attractive to be in this MC?

“Hey, Prez needs you in the control room.”

“Duty calls, don’t go anywhere,” Taz said and winked as he followed the messenger out of the room.

I sat awkwardly, wondering if I should just leave. As the minutes ticked by, I decided leaving was a good idea. As I was making my way out of the room, I looked right and left to see which way the exit was when I noticed the sign in the distance to the left. I passed a few people along the way, but they weren’t paying me any attention. I wondered if I should ask someone if they knew where I could get some party favors.

As I opened one of the double doors leading to the street, the bouncer said, “Loki wants to see you.”

I stood for a second, staring up at him. The guy was huge, but he wasn’t wearing a vest.

“What the hell’s a Loki?” I asked. I knew about Thor and Loki, but somehow that seemed irrelevant. I’d realize later the connection to Valhalla, but at the time it seemed off.

“Hey, I thought you were going to wait for me,” I heard Taz in my ear and I turned to him.

“I, well, I wanted to go, actually.”

“I have someone to introduce you to.” he guided me out of the doorway and off to the side of the hall. It was noisy with all the coming and going of the other patrons.

“Maybe some other time. I’m tired,” I said.
