He smiled and adorned her forehead with another kiss. “Thank you.”
She leaned into him for a moment, then turned coy, averting her gaze. “Do you think they’d be happy with the mate you’ve chosen?”
He faced her and brought her chin up to meet his gaze. “You have fought admirably for the people of this kingdom and for me. Fiercely even. I’ve lost count of how many times you saved my life. You have proven yourself time and time again to be more honorable than even many dragons. I’m the luckiest being alive simply because you love me. But most importantly I love you, and if that were all, it would be enough. Do I think they’d be happy about the mate I’ve chosen? I think they’d be honored to call you their daughter.”
Her eyes misted and her bottom lip quivered. He dipped his head to take her mouth with his in a warm tender kiss, her soft lips melding to his. Her hands came up to caress his shoulders. By the time he pulled back, he was half ready to take her here and now. “What would you like to do today?”
She gave him that smile of her, half wicked, half sweet, and his blood quickened. “I’d like to go to our secret spot and teach you to swim before making love on the beach.”
He pulled her into a tight embrace and claimed her lips once more, kissing her until her lips were swollen and her cheeks were flush. “Ready when you are.”
After she sifted them to the lakeshore, they forgot about swimming and lost themselves in each other, making love until the stars came out and they were both boneless with satisfaction. One day he’d let her teach him to swim so he could chase her around in the water and claim his reward when he caught her, but for now he simply held her close and luxuriated in the bliss of having her in his arms, now and forever.
