“What the fuck is going on with me?” I asked myself, pulling my pants back on. This had never happened to me before. Well, it had happened at least one time before…

And then I just knew it was Marinka’s fault. She was going to take me to the grave.

Marinka

Sebastian had beenin a very strange mood ever since we returned from France.

He barely spoke to me and I often caught him getting lost in his thoughts. I was still supposed to hate him, but that hatred was slowly tuning into something else, something I couldn’t define just yet. I was becoming attached to him, even if I didn’t want to be. This wasn’t normal behavior, but as I got to know him, I started to understand why he was that way. He wasn’t only that ruthless sociopath, but also a caring and understanding husband. What happened on the wedding trip had changed at least part of my perception of him.

And then there was the physical attraction, so strong it sometimes threatened to take me under.

The way he devoured my mouth, the thoughts of him keeping me awake at night, and making me wonder what else fate had in store for me.

I sat in his stylish penthouse living room, feeling really tempted to touch myself, but I couldn’t. After that moment in the hotel, I realized he could make it so much better for me. I had no desire to get myself off on my own.

However, Sebastian kept me at a distance. He had been cold and withdrawn. Even during dinner, I had to drag things out of him, just so we could keep the conversation going.

And then the news came on and I nearly fell off the sofa when I saw Alex’s face, the Italian guy who’d touched me up in France. The report said that he had been in a car accident and his injuries were severe. This happened when he apparently was visiting his brother, a well-known businessman in Chicago.

I switched off TV and went outside the door where Pedro normally sat. He had now been guarding me since we got back from France, while Marco worked more in the club.

The realization hit me that we’d never actually spoken properly, so he looked a little surprised to see me standing there staring at him.

“Hey, Pedro,” I said.

“Good morning. Is there anything I can help you with, Ms. Dimitri?” he asked, giving me his usual rigid look. I thought it was funny that he wanted to pretend he didn’t care about me at all, but I’d seen him panic when I wasn’t where I was supposed to be. Sebastian must have given him a hard time about this.

“Yes, can you tell me if Sebastian had anything to do with Alex’s accident?”

His expression went blank and I wondered if he needed more time to process my question.

“I don’t understand,” he muttered, scratching his head. He seemed genuinely confused, but how could I be sure? Pedro was probably a calculating killer just like Sebastian, so he would lie to me. I guessed my goal was to take note of his body language—make note of any odd reaction.

“Alex and his brother were in a serious accident. Did you have anything to do with it? Did Sebastian ask you to mess with the brakes?”

He still looked confused. I didn’t know what to think.

“No, I don’t know anything about any accident. Besides, I was here in the past week as I always am,” he replied and then we both heard someone coming up the elevator.

I wondered about what went on downstairs, what Sebastian was doing. Who he was meeting with. I’d learnt the other day that Sebastian was one of three brothers. He also had a sister. This was all in the files Jordan had provided for me when she came over for the first time, but I’d never met any other members of his family.

Sebastian was probably keeping me here because he thought I wasn’t ready. Well, I did screw up that first meeting for him.

I held my breath when the elevator doors opened up and Sebastian walked in carrying a large manila envelope.

“What is she doing outside?” he chided when he saw me leaning against the door, close to Pedro.

My stomach tightened as heat rushed through my core, all the way to my toes.

He looked so handsome and I automatically wanted to slap myself. What the hell was wrong with me? The man was dangerous and I wasn’t falling for him just because of that stupid kiss.

“I was asking Pedro if he had anything to do with Alex’s and his brother’s accident,” I said, deciding honesty was the best policy.

Bad idea.

Sebastian’s eyes darkened. Without a word, he shoved me back inside the penthouse and said a few quick words to Pedro, which I couldn’t make out. Pedro said something back to him and he didn’t sound too happy. What was going on between them both?“None of this should be concerning you, teacup,” he finally stated, shutting the door behind him.
